The President of the Hamburg Parliament ({{Lang-de, Präsident der Hamburgischen Bürgerschaft) presides over the sessions of the Bürgerschaft, the parliament of Hamburg, with functions similar to that of a speaker in other countries. In the Hamburg order of precedence, the office is ranked first before the Government of Hamburg#Executive, first Mayor. History The office of the President of the Hamburg Parliament exists since December 6, 1859. It was constitutionally established on September 28, 1860. Johannes Versmann was the first President of the Hamburg Parliament. Herbert Dau held the office of president the longest period from 1960 to 1978. The Hamburg Parliament (german: Hamburgische Bürgerschaft; literally “Hamburgish Citizenry”) is the unicameral legislature of the German state of Hamburg according to the constitution of Hamburg. As of 2011 there were 121 members in the parliament, representing a relatively equal amount of constituencies. Carola Veit
Carola Alexandra Veit (born 2 June 1973 in Hamburg) is a German lawyer and politician who has been president of the Hamburg Parliament since 23 March 2011. Early career Having grown up in Hamburg's Billstedt district, Veit trained as a paralegal then a lawyer. Political career Veit became a member of the SPD in 1991 and a member of the Hamburg Mitte District Board in 2000. Since 2004, Veit has been a member of the Hamburg Parliament for the SPD. She has since been serving on several committees such as the Committee on Families, Children and Youth and the Committee on Constitutional Matters. In the 20th session of the parliament (2011–2015) she was elected President of the Hamburg Parliament. She was re-elected for a further term, 2015–2020, in the 21st session. Hamburg City Hall (german: link=no, Hamburger Rathaus, ) is the seat of local government of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Germany. Johannes Versmann
Johannes Georg Andreas Versmann (7 December 1820 in Sankt Pauli – 28 July 1899 in Hamburg) was a German lawyer and politician. He was the first president of the new '' Bürgerschaft of Hamburg'' in 1859 and dominated the politics of the Hanseatic state as first or second mayor between 1887 and 1899. Life Versmann was educated in the classical institutions of the city, Christianeum, where he established a lifelong friendship with the classical scholar Theodor Mommsen, and Johanneum until 1840. He studied law at the Georgia Augusta in Göttingen and at the Ruperto Carola in Heidelberg until 1844 and settled as lawyer in Hamburg in the same year.
