Prees Branch Linear Nature Reserve - Geograph
Prees () is a village and civil parish in north Shropshire, near the border between England and Wales. Its name is Celtic and means "brushwood". Prees civil parish The civil parish includes many other villages and hamlets as well as the namesake Prees Village. Examples include the villages Prees Higher Heath and Prees Green and the hamlets of Prees Lower Heath and Prees Wood (which all share the name Prees). Sandford, Darliston, Fauls and Mickley to the east of the village are also included in the parish. Prees Heath, a nearby village, despite its name, is not part of the civil parish and is actually contained within the neighbouring Whitchurch civil parish. The population of the civil parish in 2001 was recorded at 2688, increasing to 2,895 Census. Prees village Prees is northeast of the small town of Wem. The Great Ejection followed the Act of Uniformity 1662 in England. Several thousand Puritan ministers were forced out of their positions in the Church of England, following Stuart Restoration, The Restoration of Charles II of England, Charles II. It was a consequence (not necessarily intended) of the Savoy Conference of 1661. Thomas Gilbert (minister)
Thomas Gilbert (1613–1694) was an English ejected minister of the seventeenth century. Biography Thomas Gilbert, son of William Gilbert of Prees, Shropshire, was born in 1613. In 1629 he became a student in St Edmund Hall, Oxford, his tutor being Ralph Morhall. After graduating B.A. on 28 May 1633, he obtained some employment in Ireland, but returned to Oxford and graduated M.A. on 7 November 1638. Through the favour of Philip, fourth baron Wharton, he obtained the vicarage of Upper Winchendon, Buckinghamshire, and (about 1644) the vicarage of St Laurence's Church, Reading, Berkshire, when he took the covenant. He sided with the Independents, according to Tanner (a statement which seems questionable, according to the Dictionary of National Biography), and was created B.D. on 19 May 1648 at the parliamentary visitation of Oxford. James Fleetwood
James Fleetwood (baptised 25 April 1603, Chalfont St Giles; died 17 July 1683, Hartlebury Castle) was an English clergyman and Bishop of Worcester. Life He was descended from the old Lancashire family of Fleetwood and was the seventh son of Sir George Fleetwood of The Vache, Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire. He was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge. Upon his ordination he was appointed chaplain to Dr Wright Bishop of Lichfield. Quina Brook
Quina Brook is a hamlet in north Shropshire, near the border between England and Wales. Population details for the 2011 census are found under Wem Rural. Quina Brook was the final destination of an arm of the Ellesmere Canal. This arm was originally going to terminate at Prees. Ellesmere Canal
The Ellesmere Canal was a waterway in England and Wales that was planned to carry boat traffic between the rivers Mersey and Severn. The proposal would create a link between the Port of Liverpool and the mineral industries in north east Wales and the manufacturing centres in the West Midlands. However, the canal was never completed as intended because of its rising costs and failure to generate the expected commercial traffic. The Ellesmere Canal, which was first proposed in 1791, would have created a waterway between Netherpool, Cheshire, and Shrewsbury.
