Preening
Preening is a found in birds that involves the use of the beak to position feathers, interlock feather that have become separated, clean plumage, and keep ectoparasites in check. Feathers contribute significantly to a bird's insulation, waterproofing and aerodynamic flight, and so are vital to its survival. Because of this, birds spend considerable time each day maintaining their feathers, primarily through preening. Several actions make up preening behaviour. Birds fluff up and shake their feathers, which helps to "rezip" feather barbules that have become unhooked. Using their beaks, they gather preen oil from a gland at the base of their tail and distribute this oil through their feathers. They draw each contour feather through their bill, nibbling it from base to tip. Over time, some elements of preening have evolved to have secondary functions. Uropygial Gland
The uropygial gland, informally known as the preen gland or the oil gland, is a bilobed sebaceous gland possessed by the majority of birds used to distribute the gland's oil through the plumage by means of preening. It is located dorsally at the base of the tail (between the fourth caudal vertebra and the pygostyle) and is greatly variable in both shape and size. In some species, the opening of the gland has a small tuft of feathers to provide a wick for the preen oil (see below). It is a holocrine gland enclosed in a connective tissue capsule made up of glandular acini that deposit their oil secretion into a common collector tube ending in a variable number of pores (openings), most typically two. Each lobe has a central cavity that collects the secretion from tubules arranged radially around the cavity. Trifluralin is a commonly used pre-emergence herbicide. With about used in the United States in 2001, it is one of the most widely used herbicides. Trifluralin is generally applied to the soil to provide control of a variety of annual grass and broadleaf weed species. It inhibits root development by interrupting mitosis, and thus can control weeds as they germinate. Environmental Regulation Trifluralin has been banned in the European Union since 20 March 2008, primarily due to high toxicity to aquatic life. Trifluralin is on the United States Environmental Protection Agency list of Hazardous Air Pollutants as a regulated substance under the Clean Air Act. Garyn Preen
Garyn Vernon Preen (born 25 October 1991) is a Welsh footballer who plays as a winger for RTB Ebbw Vale. Club career Preen began his career as a youth player with Welsh club Cardiff City, joining the youth system at Southampton at the age of 12. On 23 July 2010, with no appearances for the South Coast club, he joined League Two side Burton Albion on a free transfer following his release by the Saints. Preen made his debut for the club on 11 August in the First Round of the League Cup against former club Cardiff City, coming on as a 73rd-minute substitute for Lewis Young.
