Prato (Leventina)
Prato (Leventina) is a municipality in the district of Leventina in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. History Prato (Leventina) is first mentioned in 1211 as ''de Prato''. In German it used to be known as ''Pratt'', though this name is no longer used. Between 1902 and 1939 it was known as ''Prato-Fiesso''. The village may have grown up around a ''Sust'' (an alpine warehouse and administrative center) along the Gotthard road. The village was the center of a '' Vicinanza'' which consisted of the '' Degagne'' of Prato, Fiesso and until 1866, Dalpe. The villages played an important part in the organization of the mule traders that traveled over the passes. They retained a leading role until 1820, when the first cantonal road was built over the pass. In 1561, the ''Dazio Grande'' was built in Rodi. Prato-Sornico is a former municipality in the district of Vallemaggia in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. The municipality contained the villages Prato and Sornico. These entities were former municipalities of their own, having been merged to form Prato-Sornico in 1864. Leopoldo Prato
Leopoldo Cesare Prato was an Italian major of the First Italo-Ethiopian War. He commanded the 6th African Infantry Battalion during the Battle of Adwa before being killed in the battle. He was also a posthumous recipient of the Gold Medal of Military Valor for his service in the battle. Biography Leopoldo was born on February 3, 1845, at Pamparato as the son of Antonio Prato and Luigia Barberis. He enlisted as a volunteer on August 5, 1862, with a term of eight years. In March 1864, he was assigned to the 1st Bersaglieri Infantry Regiment as a corporal before being promoted to sergeant and quartermaster. Prato was then admitted to the on April 1, 1873, and was appointed Second Lieutenant the next year. Initially assigned to the 10th Bersaglieri Infantry Regiment on April 29, he was promoted to Lieutenant by 1879 and was transferred to the 3rd Bersaglieri Infantry Regiment which was stationed at Messina on May 17, 1880, along with a promotion to captain. Katharina Prato, full name Katharina Pratobevera, née Polt (1818–1897) was an Austrian cookbook writer. In 1858, she published '' Die süddeutsche Küche'' which became enormously popular for decades, reaching an 80th edition in 1957. Biography Born on 26 February 1818 in Graz, she was the daughter of Franz Polt, a gentleman of private means. As a member of a well-to-do family, in addition to housekeeping, she learnt to speak French and to play the piano. In 1857, she married Eduard Pratobevera, a retired officer and historian who suffered from a serious stomach ailment. Despite her careful attention to his dietary needs, he died on 18 December the same year. Queijo prato (, literally "plate-shaped cheese"), named after the shape it was originally made by the immigrants, is a Brazilian soft cheese, similar to the Danish cheese danbo. It is one of the most popular Brazilian cheeses. In the 1920s, Danish immigrants in rural parts of Aiuruoca, Minas Gerais, laid the foundation for the production of queijo prato.
