Tamara Podpalnaya (born January 3, 1972) is a Russian Paralympic powerlifter. She has represented Russia at the Paralympics in 2000, 2004, 2008 and in 2012. Tamara Podpalnaya has won a tally of 4 medals including 2 gold and silver medals for Russia in the Paralympic event since making her debut in the 2000 Summer Paralympics held in Melbourne. Biography She took the sport of powerlifting in 1997 soon after becoming a mother at the age of 23. She was married to Andrey Podpalny who is a weightlifter and a professional powerlifting coach. Her husband has been coaching the powerlifting sport for her since 1997 after giving birth to a daughter. Her daughter, Uliana Podpalnaya is a Para athlete who has also won a bronze medal in the 2016 IPC European Athletics shot put event. Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. As in the sport of Olympic weightlifting, it involves the athlete attempting a maximal weight single-lift effort of a barbell loaded with weight plates. Powerlifting evolved from a sport known as "odd lifts", which followed the same three-attempt format but used a wider variety of events, akin to strongman competition. The women's 52 kg powerlifting event at the 2008 Summer Paralympics was contested on 10 September at the Beihang University Gymnasium in Beijing, China. This event was the fourth-lightest of the women's powerlifting weight classes, limiting competitors to a maximum of of body mass. As with all Paralympic powerlifting events, lifters competed in the bench press. Each athlete was allowed three attempts to bench press as much weight as possible. Athletes attempting to break a record were allowed a fourth attempt. For the attempt to be valid, the competitor must have lowered the weighted bar to her chest, held it motionless for a moment, then pressed the bar upwards until her arms were fully extended. If the competitor failed to meet these requirements or any other rule infraction was committed, the attempt was declared invalid by a team of three referees and the result struck from the record.
