Bijeli Potok Massacre
The Bijeli Potok massacre refers to the mass killing of 675 Bosniak civilians by Serbs on 1 June 1992 in the settlement Bijeli Potok within the village Đulići, located in the municipality of Zvornik, Bosnia and Herzegovina. About 675 Bosniak men and boys, from the multiple villages around Zvornik, were separated from their families by Serb forces, and slaughtered within a week at Bijeli Potok and their bodies hidden in mass graves throughout the Drina Valley. As of May 2020, the remains of about 245 of the victims have yet to be found. Background and overview The Bosnian War started in spring of 1992. Chaim Potok (February 17, 1929 – July 23, 2002) was an American author and rabbi. His first book ''The Chosen'' (1967), was listed on ''The New York Times’'' best seller list for 39 weeks and sold more than 3,400,000 copies. Biography Herman Harold Potok was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Benjamin Max (died 1958) and Mollie (née Friedman) Potok (died 1985), Jewish immigrants from Poland. He was the oldest of four children, all of whom either became or married rabbis. His Hebrew name was Chaim Tzvi (חיים צבי). He received an Orthodox Jewish education. After reading Evelyn Waugh's novel ''Brideshead Revisited'' as a teenager, he decided to become a writer (he often said that the novel ''Brideshead Revisited'' is what inspired his work and literature). Anna Maximilian Potok (4 June 1897 – 22 April 1987) was a Polish-born fur designer and, with her brother, Maximilian Apfelbaum (later Michael Maximilian) co-founder of the New York furriers Maximilian. Biography Potok was born Anna Apfelbaum on 4 June 1897 in Warsaw, Poland, the third generation of a family of furriers. After her father died when she was 19, she joined her brother Maximilian in the business in 1922. She married Leon Potok (d.1965), an engineer and stock market investor, on 7 July 1930, and they had one son, the author and disabled rights advocate Andrew Potok, born 1931. In 1934 she was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta. The Apfelbaums survived the 1903–06 pogroms due to their supplying furs to the highest levels of Polish society, including the President of Poland and the Mayor of Warsaw.
