The New Zealand mud snail (''Potamopyrgus antipodarum'') is a species of very small freshwater snail with a gill and an operculum. This aquatic gastropod mollusk is in the family Tateidae. It is native to New Zealand, where it is found throughout the country, but it has been introduced to many other countries, where it is often considered an invasive species because populations of the snail can reach very high densities. Shell description The shell of ''Potamopyrgus antipodarum'' is elongated and has dextral coiling, with 7 to 8 whorls. Between whorls are deep grooves. Habitat This snail has been found in only one location in a gully, on a very small and steep limestone bank, at Limestone Downs Station in the Waikato. This snail was first discovered in 1981 but several surveys in 2002 and 2003 has failed to find any further specimens. The area has been cleared for agriculture and is under threat of damage by cattle. It is possible that this snail is extinct. ''Potamopyrgus oppidanus'' is a species of freshwater gastropod mollusk in the family Tateidae. It is endemic to New Zealand where it is found only in one area in the town belt of Wellington. Taxonomy This species was first described by Martin Haase in 2008 using specimens collected in a stream in Wadestown in Wellington. The holotype specimen is held at the National Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Description This species is approximately 3 mm in length and just over 1 mm in width. The shell is light brown in colour and semi transparent. The colour of the mantle can be patchy and there are two black stripes on the head of the snail. ''Potamopyrgus doci'' is a critically endangered species of fresh water snail native to New Zealand. Habitat This snail has been found in only one location in a spring at the exit of Ruakuri Cave, in the Waitomo Caves, north west of Te Kuiti. This habitat is only a few square metres in size but is within a protected area. However, there is recreational rafting in the cave and agriculture upstream may result in a decline in water quality. Despite this the population trend is regarded as being stable.
