Post Office (short Story)
"Post Office" is a Gujarati short story written by Indian writer Dhumketu (1892–1965). It was first published in 1923, and is considered Dhumketu's most famous and frequently anthologised short story. The story is about a father's affection for his daughter, and the apathetic bureaucracy of the local post office. It is notable for its description, narrative, and dialogues. Publication "Post Office" was first published in the literary journal ''Sahitya'' in 1923. It was later published in Dhumketu's first short story collection, ''Tankha'' () Vol. 1, in 1926. Plot The story takes place during wartime. The protagonist, Ali Coachman, was a legendary hunter in his early life, but he gives up hunting after his daughter Mariyam marries a soldier. Dhumketu (writer)
Gaurishankar Govardhanram Joshi (1892–1965), better known by his pen name Dhumaketu, was an Indian Gujarati-language writer, who is considered one of the pioneers of the Gujarati short story. He published twenty-four collections of short stories, as well as thirty-two novels on social and historical subjects, and plays and travelogues. His writing is characterised by a dramatic style, romanticism and powerful depiction of human emotions. Early life Gaurishankar was the third son of Govardhanram Joshi and was a Baj Khedawal Brahmin by birth. He was born on 12 December 1892 at Virpur, a place near Rajkot and Gondal (now in Gujarat, India). Gaurishankar served at Virpur School drawing a salary of four Rupees per month. During this period he was asked to read biographies, historical novels etc. before Khatijabibi, who was the wife of Ishan. This habit made Guarishankar take a deep interest in literature. Gujarati Sahitya Parishad () is a literary organisation for the promotion of Gujarati literature located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. It was founded by Ranjitram Mehta with the aim of creating literature appealing to all classes of society and cultivating a literary sense among the people. Many prominent people including Mahatma Gandhi and Kanaiyalal Munshi have presided over the organisation. Its headquarters, located on Ashram Road, is known as Govardhan Bhavan. Kamal Vora (born 19 May 1950) is a Gujarati language poet and editor from Mumbai, India. He is an editor of ''Etad'', a quarterly Gujarati literary magazine.
