Portugal competed at the 2016 European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam, Netherlands, between 6 and 10 July 2016. On 27 June 2016, the Portuguese Athletics Federation announced the list of 33 athletes taking part in the championships, which included 16 men and 17 women. Federação Portuguesa de Atletismo (FPAtletismo), is the governing body for the sport of athletics in Portugal. History The Federação Portuguesa de Atletismo was founded on 5 November 1921, under the name "Federação Portuguesa de Sports Atléticos". It is headquartered in Linda-a-Velha, Oeiras. It's an independent sports governing body, of public interest, non-profit, ruled by their own code. The Federação Portuguesa de Atletismo (FPAtletismo) organizes the Portuguese Indoor and Outdoor Athletics Championships. It has 21 regional associations, promoting and directing the practice of athletics, in men's and women's. Rui Pedro Gonçalves Pinto (born 20 October 1988) is a Portuguese activist, whistleblower, creator of the Football Leaks website, and responsible for ''Malta Files'' and '' Luanda Leaks'' revelations. Pinto created the ''Football Leaks'' website in September 2015, with the intention of revealing the financial picture of association football, including the tax avoidance schemes used by top players and the controversial third-party ownership models used by clubs. He is being accused of having used illegal methods to gather the data he leaked, by accessing private servers and downloading hundreds of internal documents and communications. Pinto was arrested in Budapest, Hungary, in January 2019 at the request of the Portuguese authorities on suspicion of attempted qualified extortion, violation of secrecy and illegally accessing information. José Moreira (athlete)
José Filipe da Silva Moreira (born 20 March 1982) is a Portuguese former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He spent most of his career with Benfica, appearing in 148 competitive matches and making his Primeira Liga debut at 19. He also competed in Wales and Cyprus. Samuel Vila Barata (born 19 July 1993) is a Portuguese long-distance runner. In 2020, he competed in the men's race at the World Athletics Half Marathon Championships held in Gdynia, Poland. Career Barata represented Portugal at the European Athletics Championships both in 2016 and in 2018. Francis Obikwelu
Francis Obiorah Obikwelu, GOIH (born 22 November 1978) is a retired Nigerian-born Portuguese sprinter, who specialized in 100 metres and 200 metres. He was the 2004 Olympic silver medalist in the 100 metres. In the same race, he set the former European record in the event at 9.86 seconds, which stood for nearly 17 years. Biography Obikwelu was born in Onitsha, Nigeria. At the age of 14, one of Obikwelu's football coaches noticed him and suggested he try out athletics.
