''Portrait of a Man'' is an oil-on-canvas painting created c. 1545 by the Italian High Renaissance artist Lorenzo Lotto. Its dating is based on stylistic similarities to Lotto's other works of the mid-1540s, such as '' Portrait of an Old Man with Gloves'' (Milan). Another theory holds that the subject is Giovanni Taurini da Montepulciano, viceroy of Ancona, which would change the date to 1551, the year of Lotto's arrival in Ancona. Lorenzo Lotto
Lorenzo Lotto (c. 1480 – 1556/57) was an Italian Painting, painter, draughtsman, and illustrator, traditionally placed in the Venetian school (art), Venetian school, though much of his career was spent in other north Italian cities. He painted mainly altarpieces, religious subjects and portraits. He was active during the High Renaissance and the first half of the Mannerism, Mannerist period, but his work maintained a generally similar High Renaissance style throughout his career, although his nervous and eccentric posings and distortions represented a transitional stage to the Florentine and Roman Mannerists. Overview During his lifetime Lotto was a well-respected painter and certainly popular in Northern Italy; he is traditionally included in Venetian school (art), the Venetian School, but his independent career actually places him outside the Venetian art scene. ''Portrait of an Old Man with Gloves'' is an oil-on-canvas painting by the Italian High Renaissance artist Lorenzo Lotto. It is assigned a date c.1543 on the basis of stylistic similarities with ''Portrait of Febo da Brescia'', ''Portrait of a Thirty-Seven-Year-Old Gentleman'' and other works produced by the artist in the mid 1540s. Its final private owner was count Castellane Harrach of Turin, from whose collection it entered the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan in 1859, where it still hangs. Some art historians hold the subject to be Liberale da Pinedel, a portrait of whom was mentioned in Lotto's account books in 1543, shortly after the painter's arrival in Treviso, although Liberale would then only have been 47 or 48 years old, younger than the portrait's subject. The Pinacoteca di Brera ("Brera Art Gallery") is the main public gallery for paintings in Milan, Italy. It contains one of the foremost collections of Italian paintings from the 13th to the 20th century, an outgrowth of the cultural program of the Brera Academy, which shares the site in the Palazzo Brera. History The Palazzo Brera owes its name to the Germanic ''braida'', indicating a grassy opening in the city structure: compare the ''Bra'' of Verona. The convent on the site passed to the Jesuits (1572), then underwent a radical rebuilding by Francesco Maria Richini (1627–28). When the Jesuits were disbanded in 1773, the palazzo remained the seat of the astronomical Observatory and the Braidense National Library founded by the Jesuits.
