''Portrait of a Lady on Fire'' (french: Portrait de la jeune fille en feu, lit=Portrait of the Young Lady on Fire) is a 2019 French historical romantic drama film written and directed by Céline Sciamma, starring Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel. Set in France in the late 18th century, the film tells the story of an affair between an aristocrat and a painter commissioned to paint her portrait. ''Portrait of a Lady on Fire'' was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The film won the Queer Palm at Cannes, becoming the first film directed by a woman to win the award. Sciamma also won the award for Best Screenplay at Cannes. The film was theatrically released in France on 18 September 2019. Céline Sciamma
Céline Sciamma (; born 12 November 1978) is a French screenwriter and film director. She is especially known for her films Girlhood (film), ''Girlhood'' (2014), ''My Life as a Courgette'' (2016), and ''Portrait of a Lady on Fire'' (2019), winning many nominations and awards for her films. A common theme in Sciamma's films is the gender fluidity, fluidity of gender and sexual identity among girls and women, and her films explore the female gaze. Early life and education Sciamma was born on 12 November 1978 was raised in Cergy-Pontoise, a suburb outside of Paris. Her father, Dominique Sciamma, is a software designer, and her brother, Laurent Sciamma, is a stand-up performer and graphic designer.
