Porter Houses And Armstrong Kitchen
Porter Houses and Armstrong Kitchen is a set of two historic homes and a kitchen building located near Whitakers, Edgecombe County, North Carolina. The first Porter dwelling dates to the last quarter of the 18th century, and is a -story frame dwelling with a gambrel roof. It was restored in 1994. The second Porter dwelling also dates to the last quarter of the 18th century, and is a one-room, -story frame dwelling with a gable roof. It measures approximately 16 feet wide and 24 feet long. Also on the property is a frame kitchen building built about 1850 and remodeled about 1900. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Whitakers, North Carolina
Whitakers is a town in Edgecombe and Nash Counties in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is divided between the two counties by railroad tracks and is the northernmost town in the two counties. It is part of the Rocky Mount, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 744 in 2010. History The Porter Houses and Armstrong Kitchen was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Geography Whitakers is located at (36.105951, -77.713582). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of .81 square miles (2.1 km), all land. Edgecombe County, North Carolina
Edgecombe County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 48,900. Its county seat is Tarboro. Edgecombe County is part of the Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The county was formed in 1741 from Bertie County. It was named for Richard Edgcumbe, a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1701 to 1742 and a lord of the treasury, who became 1st Baron Richard Edgecombe in 1742. In 1746 part of Edgecombe County became Granville County; in 1758 another portion became Halifax County; and in 1777 yet another part became Nash County. In 1855 the formation of Wilson County from parts of Edgecombe County, Johnston County, Nash County, and Wayne County reduced Edgecombe to its present size, with a minor boundary adjustments.
