Benjamin Perley Poore
Benjamin Perley Poore (November 2, 1820 – May 30, 1887) was a prominent American newspaper correspondent, editor, and author in the mid-19th century. One of the most popular and prolific journalists of his era, he was an active partisan for the Whig and Republican parties. Biography Poore was born at the home of his maternal grandparents in Newburyport, Massachusetts, to parents Benjamin and Mary Perley (Dodge) Poore whose family estate, Indian Hill Farm, was in nearby West Newbury, Massachusetts. His father's family were long-time residents of the area; his mother had been born in 1799 in Georgetown, a small incorporated community in the newly defined District of Columbia. When Poore was seven, his parents took him to Washington, D.C., for the first time, during the administration of President John Quincy Adams. Henry Rankin Poore
Henry Rankin Poore (1859–1940), often Henry R. Poore, was an American painter and illustrator, known for incorporating human and animal figures into his landscape and genre paintings. He was also a lecturer and critic, and a prolific author on art and composition. Painter and teacher Poore was born on March 21, 1859, in Newark, New Jersey, to Rev. Daniel Warren Poore and Susan Helen Poore née Ellis. He spent his childhood in California, and then studied at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1883. That same year, ''The New York Times'' identified him as "a promising young Philadelphia painter," and wrote approvingly of his illustrations for a new edition of ''The Night Before Christmas''. Robert Montagu Poore (20 March 1866 – 14 July 1938) was a cricketer and British army officer who, whilst serving in South Africa in 1896, played in three Test matches for the South African cricket team. Much of his cricket was played when he held the rank of major, but he eventually became a brigadier-general. "Of all the people in the history of the game," wrote Leo Cooper in an introduction to A. A. Thomson's ''Odd Men In'', "he seems to stand for the Eccentric Ideal." Roger Dennistoun "Dennis" Poore (19 August 1916, Paddington, London – 12 February 1987, Kensington) was a British entrepreneur, financier and sometime racing driver. He became chairman of NVT during the dying days of the old British motorcycle industry. Family His father, Roger Poore, DSO, was killed in action in World War I on 26 September 1917. Matt Beresford Poore (1 June 1930 – 11 June 2020) was a New Zealand cricketer who played 14 Test matches for New Zealand in the 1950s. He was born in Christchurch. Domestic career A right-handed middle order batsman and handy off-spin bowler, Poore played for Canterbury from 1950–51 to 1957–58, then returned for three matches in 1961–62. His highest score was 142 opening the batting against Central Districts in 1954–55, a match in which the next highest score was 55. It was the highest score in the Plunket Shield in the 1954–55 season. His other century was 103, opening the batting against Auckland in 1956-57 after taking 4 for 72 (figures of 47.2–22–72–4) in the first innings. His best bowling was 5 for 27 against Indian Universities in the final match of the 1955-56 tour.
