Great Ponton
Great Ponton is an English village and civil parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, south of Grantham on the A1 trunk road, which bisects the village. The tower of the parish church is a roadside landmark. The 2001 Census recorded a population of 333, of whom all were of white ethnic origin and 87 per cent described themselves as Christian. The average age was 40. The population of the civil parish had risen to 379 at the 2011 Census. It was estimated at 369 in 2019. History The village is named in the ''Domesday Book'' of 1086 as Magna Pamptune, probably meaning "farmstead by a hill". Some material remains have been found dating back to the Neolithic age. Remains of a mid-Bronze Age round barrow cemetery were discovered between Great Ponton and Sproxton in 1959. The village belonged to the historical wapentake of Winnibriggs and Threo. Little Ponton is a village in the South Kesteven Non-metropolitan district, district of Lincolnshire, England. It lies south of Grantham, about above sea level. Its population is included in that of the civil parish of Little Ponton and Stroxton. History Part of the Roman roads in Britain, Roman road of Ermine Street (known locally as the High Dyke, Lincolnshire, High Dyke) passes through the parish. Mungo Ponton
Mungo Ponton FRS FRSE (20 November 1801 – 3 August 1880) was a Scottish inventor who in 1839 created a method of permanent photography based on potassium dichromate. Life and family Ponton was born in the Balgreen district of west Edinburgh, the son of John Ponton, a farmer. He was named after the explorer Mungo Park, then a new Scottish hero. In 1815 he was apprenticed as a lawyer to James Balfour WS (of Pilrig House), working at chambers at 17 Broughton Street in the eastern New Town of Edinburgh. He finished his apprenticeship at GL Finlay WS at 18 Queen Street. He was created a Writer to the Signet on 8 December 1825. He then went into partnership with AW Goldie to create Goldie & Ponton WS based at 58 India Street in the western New Town. He married Helen Scott Campbell on 24 June 1830 and together they had seven children.
