The Royal Navy (RN) is the United Kingdom's naval warfare force. French Frigate Astrée (1809)
''Astrée'' was a 44-gun of the French Navy, launched at Cherbourg in 1809. In December of the next year she captured HMS ''Africaine''. The Royal Navy captured ''Astrée'' in 1810 and took her into service under her French name, rating her as a 38-gun frigate, but then in 1811 recommissioned her as HMS ''Pomone''. She served during the War of 1812 and was broken up in 1816. French service ''Astrée'' took part in the campaign in the Indian Ocean under Commander René Lemarant de Kerdaniel, serving with Hamelin's squadron. She also was present in the final stages of the Battle of Grand Port. A few days later, on 30 August, ''Astrée'' recaptured the 1-gun schooner-aviso ''Mouche No.23'', which HMS ''Nereide'' had captured 2 June. ''Pomone'' was a 40-gun frigate of the French Navy, launched in 1785. The British captured her off the Île de Batz in April 1794 and incorporated her into the Royal Navy. ''Pomone'' subsequently had a relatively brief but active career in the British Navy off the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of France before suffering sufficient damage from hitting a rock. Due to this, the ship was taken out of service and then broken up in 1803. French service ''Pomone'' was built to a one-off design by Baron Charles-Etienne Bombelle. After her capture, her design inspired that of the Royal Navy's ''Endymion''-class frigates. Prix De Pomone
The Prix de Pomone is a Group 2 flat horse race in France open to thoroughbred fillies and mares aged three years or older. It is run at Deauville over a distance of 2,500 metres (about 1 mile and 4½ furlongs), and it is scheduled to take place each year in August. History The event is named after Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit trees, gardens and orchards. It was established in 1920, and it was originally contested over 2,400 metres. The race was cancelled in 1940, and it was held at Maisons-Laffitte from 1941 to 1943. It was cancelled again in 1944, and run once more at Maisons-Laffitte before returning to Deauville in 1946. It was extended to 2,600 metres in 1963. The present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, and the Prix de Pomone was initially classed at Group 3 level. ''Pomone'' ('' Pomona'') is a pastoral opera in a prologue and five acts by Robert Cambert with a libretto by Pierre Perrin. It has been described as "effectively the first French opera."Sadler 2001, p.180. Bashford 1992, p. 697: "Considered by modern scholars to be the first true French opera..." It was first performed in Paris at the Jeu de Paume de la Bouteille theatre belonging to Cambert and Perrin's Académie d'Opéra on 3 March 1671.
