The Police Service Of Northern Ireland Service Medal is a medal created to honour the service of members of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). The medal was established in January 2020 and first awarded in December 2021. Access date 2022-10-02. Criteria The Police Service Of Northern Ireland Service Medal is awarded to all officers of the PSNI who have completed 5 years' reckonable service since 25 February 2009 - the date that the threat level was raised to 'severe'. Those individuals who, as a result of injury or disability sustained in the execution of their duty in the PSNI, died or were required to leave the force are also eligible. As the medal is only awarded to police officers, a similar award – the ''Police Service of Northern Ireland Service Medallion'' – was instituted at the same time for all police staff. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI; ga, Seirbhís Póilíneachta Thuaisceart Éireann; Ulster Scots dialects, Ulster-Scots: ') is the police, police force that serves Northern Ireland. It is the successor to the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) after it was reformed and renamed in 2001 on the recommendation of the Patten Report. Although the majority of PSNI officers are Ulster Protestants, this dominance is not as pronounced as it was in the RUC because of Affirmative action, positive action policies. The RUC was a militarised police force and played a key role in policing the violent conflict known as the Troubles. As part of the Good Friday Agreement, there was an agreement to introduce a new police service initially based on the body of constables of the RUC. Jody Clark
Jody Clark (born 1 March 1981) is a British engraver formerly employed by the Royal Mint. He designed the fifth and final portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to feature on coins of the pound sterling, and that portrait was the fifth and final to feature on coins of the Australian dollar. Career Clark started his engraving career at the Arden Group with fellow experts Julian Homer and Christopher Nield. Since he joined the Royal Mint in September 2012, Clark has worked on a number of projects including commemorative pieces which were given to attendees of the 2014 NATO Summit in Wales and medals struck to commemorate the 2014 Ryder Cup which took place at Gleneagles Hotel, Scotland. He has also worked on commissions for Azerbaijan, Costa Rica, Lesotho and Tanzania. In 2014 a design by Clark was featured on the Britannia coin. Royal Ulster Constabulary Service Medal
The Royal Ulster Constabulary Service Medal was a medal created to honour the service of members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) and the RUC Reserve. Established in 1982 and first awarded in 1985, the medal ceased to be awarded when the RUC was replaced by the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Criteria This Royal Ulster Constabulary Service Medal was awarded to all members of the RUC and RUC Reserve who completed eighteen months of service. Those individuals who died, were wounded, or disabled due to service, and did not complete the required period of service were also eligible for the medal. Service must have been from 1 January 1971, until the replacement of the RUC in 2001. Description The medal is circular and made of silver coloured metal.
