Point Danger (Tweed Heads)
Point Danger is a headland, located at Coolangatta on the southern end of the Gold Coast on the east coast of Australia. Separated by Snapper Rocks and Rainbow Bay to the west, with Duranbah Beach and the Tweed River mouth to the south, present-day Point Danger has also indicated the border between New South Wales and Queensland, Australia, since 1863. The point is the location of the Captain Cook memorial and lighthouse, the Centaur Memorial and Walk of Remembrance, the Marine Rescue NSW Point Danger station, and the southern end of the Gold Coast Oceanway. The Centaur Memorial remembers the sinking of Australian Hospital Ship ''Centaur'' by a Japanese submarine on 14 May 1943. The Walk of Remembrance commemorates other ships lost to Japanese and German action during World War II and takes the form of plaques arranged in a semicircle around the lookout fence. History Captain James Cook, upon encountering the eastern Australian coast and naming Ram Head, today's Rame Head ( ... Point Danger (Portland)
Point Danger is a headland on the coast of south-western Victoria, Australia. It lies at the western end of Portland Bay, on the northern side of Bass Strait, about 6 km south-south-east of the city of Portland. Cape Nelson lies 2.5 km to the south-west and the Lawrence Rocks 2 km to the south-east. Gannet colony Point Danger is home to a colony of Australasian gannets, largely a result of spillover from the nearby Lawrence Rocks colony exceeding its capacity. Established in October 1996, it is Australia's only mainland gannet colony; all others are on islands. However, in the first year of its existence no chicks were produced because of human disturbance and predation by foxes and feral cats. The gannets have subsequently been protected both by limiting public access to a viewing site overlooking the colony and by the presence of two Maremma Sheepdogs to deter predators. Colony size has grown to about 3000 birds. References Danger Danger is a lack ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Danger Point
Danger Point is a coastal feature and cliff face in Devon (England), Devon, on the south coast of England. It is about southeast of the city of Exeter and about east of Exmouth, Devon, Exmouth and lies between the towns of Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth. Geology and littoral ecology There are two rock sequences along the coast at Budleigh Salterton, the Pebble Beds and the "Otter Sandstone Formation". In the cliff face it is very apparent that both dip eastward. The "Budleigh Salterton Pebble Beds" are overlain by the sandstones that form the cliffs at Danger Point. Both sediments are markedly red, which indicates that they were formed in a desert in the hot dry climate of in the Triassic Period about 225 million years ago. The coastal path, south of the village of Otterton on the peninsula of Otter Sandstone, has many viewpoints and headlands from which the cliffs can be seen. However, there is no safe access to the seaward shore on any of the stretch between the southern ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Danger Point Lighthouse
Danger Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse on the southern point of Walker Bay, near Gansbaai, in South Africa. It is a white octagonal masonry tower that has been in use since 1895. History Bartolomeu Dias originally named Danger Point ''Ponte de Sao Brandao'' when he landed there on May 16, 1488. The name Danger Point is derived from the treacherous reefs and rocks below the water that make it very dangerous for ships to sail close to the coast. The area is also known for the many great white sharks that are found here. More than 140 ships have been wrecked and thousands of lives lost between Danger Point and Cape Infanta, to the east of Gansbaai. The troopship HMS ''Birkenhead'' was wrecked off Danger Point in 1852. A barely visible rock (now aptly named ''Birkenhead Rock'') from Danger Point, was fatal for the troopship carrying young Welsh and Scottish soldiers and their officers and family on their way to Eastern Cape to fight the Xhosa. The ''Birkenhead'' became famou ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
