Podophyllum Peltatum
''Podophyllum peltatum'' is an herbaceous perennial plant in the family Berberidaceae. Its common names are mayapple, American mandrake, wild mandrake, and ground lemon. It is widespread across most of the eastern United States and southeastern Canada. Mayapples are woodland plants, typically growing in colonies derived from a single root. The stems grow to 30–40 cm (12 in to 16 in) tall, with palmately lobed umbrella-like leaves up to 20–40 cm (8 in to 16 in) diameter with 3–9 shallowly to deeply cut lobes. The plants produce several stems from a creeping underground rhizome; some stems bear a single leaf and do not produce any flower or fruit, while flowering stems produce a pair or more leaves with 1–8 flowers in the axil between the apical leaves. The flowers are white, yellow or red, 2–6 cm (1" to 2") diameter with 6–9 petals, and mature into a green, yellow or red fleshy fruit 2–5 cm (1 in to 2 in) long. All t ... International Plant Names Index
The International Plant Names Index (IPNI) describes itself as "a database of the names and associated basic bibliographical details of seed plants, ferns and lycophytes." Coverage of plant names is best at the rank of species and genus. It includes basic bibliographical details associated with the names. Its goals include eliminating the need for repeated reference to primary sources for basic bibliographic information about plant names. The IPNI also maintains a list of standardized author abbreviations. These were initially based on Brummitt & Powell (1992), but new names and abbreviations are continually added. Description IPNI is the product of a collaboration between The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (Index Kewensis), The Harvard University Herbaria (Gray Herbarium Index), and the Australian National Herbarium ( APNI). The IPNI database is a collection of the names registered by the three cooperating institutions and they work towards standardizing the information. The stan ... Podophyllum Versipelle
''Dysosma versipellis'' is a species of flowering plant in the barberry family Berberidaceae, native to China. It is still widely referenced under ''Podophyllum versipelle'' and there is some debate as to its correct taxonomic status. Though it has quite a broad but sparse distribution in the damp, shady forests of south and west China, it has been designated as “Vulnerable” by the IUCN. A compact herbaceous perennial growing to tall and broad, it grows from underground rhizomes, with umbrella-shaped leaves and dark red, tubular, pendent flowers in spring. It is quite hardy in temperate zones, surviving temperatures down to . However, it requires a sheltered spot in dappled shade, with acid to neutral soil. Under the synonym ''Podophyllum versipelle'' the cultivar ‘Spotty Dotty‘, distinguished by bold brown leaf markings, has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit The Award of Garden Merit (AGM) is a long-established annual award for plants ... Podophyllum Pleianthum
''Podophyllum pleianthum'' (syn. ''Dysosma pleiantha''), the many-flowered Chinese mayapple, is a species of flowering plant in the genus ''Podophyllum'', native to south-central and southeast China, including Taiwan. Shade tolerant, and deer resistant due to its toxicity, it has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Pharmacology Podophyllum pleianthum or Bajiaolian has been use in traditional Chinese medicine in China and Taiwan for the treatment of snake bite, weakness, condyloma accuminata, lymphadenopathy and tumors through ingestion of dried roots and rhizomes or application of resin. Podophyllotoxin is a major active ingredient in Podophyllum pleianthum that is cytotoxic, arresting celluar metaphase and microtubule formation in cells. Symptoms of intoxication include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea Diarrhea, also spelled diarrhoea, is the condition of having at least three loose, liquid, or watery bowel movements each day. Podophyllum Hexandrum
''Sinopodophyllum'' is an herbaceous perennial plant in the family Berberidaceae, described as a genus in 1979. It includes only one known species, ''Sinopodophyllum hexandrum'', native to Afghanistan, Bhutan, northern India, Kashmir, Nepal, Pakistan, and western China ( Gansu, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Tibet, Yunnan). Common names include Himalayan may apple and Indian may apple. Description ''Sinopodophyllum hexandrum'' is low to the ground with glossy green, drooping, lobed leaves on its few stiff branches, bearing a pale pink flower and bright red-orange bulbous fruit. The ornamental appearance of the plant make it a desirable addition to woodland-type gardens. It can be propagated by seed or by dividing the rhizome. It is very tolerant of cold temperatures, as would be expected of a Himalayan plant, but it does not tolerate dry conditions. Its name in Hindi and Ayurveda is ''bantrapushi'' or ''Giriparpat'' and is locally referred to as 'ban kakdi' in the Valley of Fl ...
