Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area is a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the central region of the U.S. state of Mississippi that covers seven counties: Copiah, Hinds, Holmes, Madison, Rankin, Simpson, and Yazoo. Pocahontas Mounds ( 22 HI 500) is an archaeological site from the Plaquemine Mississippian culture in Hinds County, Mississippi, dating from 800 to 1300 CE. Two mounds from the site were added to the NRHP on two separate occasions, ''Pocahontas Mound A'' on November 25, 1969, as NRIS number 69000365 and ''Pocahontas Mound B'' on April 11, 1972, as NRIS number 72000694. The mounds are listed on the Mississippi Mound Trail. Description The site consists of two mounds, a rectangular platform mound and a mortuary mound, and an associated village area. The site was occupied from 800 to 1300 CE by peoples of the Coles Creek and Plaquemine Mississippian cultures, although evidence found during excavations in 2004 showed that the site was occupied briefly in the Middle-Late Archaic period about 4000-1000 BCE. Gene Porter
Eugene Porter (June 7, 1910 – February 24, 1993) was an American jazz saxophonist and clarinetist. Early life Porter was born in Pocahontas, Mississippi on June 7, 1910. He began on cornet, but when his instrument was stolen he picked up saxophone and clarinet (studying the latter under Omer Simeon). He moved to Chicago while still in high school, and left school early to start a career in music. Later life and career Porter worked in and around New Orleans as well as on riverboats, with Papa Celestin, Joe Robichaux (1933), and Sidney Desvigne (1935). He was with the Jeter-Pillars Orchestra from 1935 to 1937, then played with Don Redman briefly before returning to Jeter-Pillars until 1942. Following this he worked with Jimmie Lunceford (1942) and Benny Carter (1942–44), working as assistant bandleader under Carter and appearing in several films, including with Fats Waller. Pocahontas
Pocahontas (, ; born Amonute, known as Matoaka, 1596 – March 1617) was a Native American woman, belonging to the Powhatan people, notable for her association with the colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. She was the daughter of Powhatan, the paramount chief of a network of tributary tribes in the Tsenacommacah, encompassing the Tidewater region of Virginia. Pocahontas was captured and held for ransom by English colonists during hostilities in 1613. During her captivity, she was encouraged to convert to Christianity and was baptized under the name Rebecca. She married tobacco planter John Rolfe in April 1614 at the age of about 17 or 18, and she bore their son Thomas Rolfe in January 1615.
