Plymouth Drake (UK Parliament Constituency)
Plymouth Drake was a borough constituency in the city of Plymouth, in Devon. It elected one Member of Parliament to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom by the first past the post system of election. History The first Drake constituency was created for the 1918 general election, and abolished for the 1950 general election. For most of this time it was held by the Conservative Party. It was a Labour gain in the Attlee landslide of 1945, although it had been held by Labour once before, in the 1929–31 Parliament. The second incarnation of the constituency was created for the February 1974 general election. For the whole of its 23-year existence it was represented by just one MP, Dame Janet Fookes of the Conservative Party. Plymouth Sutton And Devonport (UK Parliament Constituency)
Plymouth Sutton and Devonport is a constituency created in 2010, and represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2017 by Luke Pollard, a Labour Co-operative party candidate. The seat is one of two won (held or gained) by a Labour candidate in 2017 from a total of twelve in its county. Pollard's 2017 win was one of 30 net gains for the Labour Party. The seat was in 2010 and 2015 a very marginal win for Oliver Colvile, his greatest majority being 2.6%. Constituency profile The constituency covers the south of the city including HMNB Devonport, and has a large student population attending the University of Plymouth. Boundaries The seat is a borough constituency (for the purposes of type of returning officer and election expenses). Arthur Shirley Benn
Arthur Shirley Benn, 1st Baron Glenravel, (20 December 1858 – 13 June 1937), known as Sir Arthur Benn, Bt, between 1926 and 1936, was a British businessman and politician. Early life He was born on 20 December 1858, in Cork, Ireland, the son of Reverend John Watkins Benn. He received his formal education at Clifton College, then at Inner Temple. Business career He became a managing director, then the British Vice-Consul to Mobile, Alabama. Political career Benn became active in the Conservative Party, and stood in Battersea at the 1906 general election. In 1907, he was elected to London County Council, representing the equivalent seat, a post he held for four years. He stood for Parliament in Battersea again in January 1910. Janet Evelyn Fookes
Janet Evelyn Fookes, Baroness Fookes (born 21 February 1936) is a British politician. A member of the Conservative Party, she is a life peer in the House of Lords. She was previously a member of the House of Commons from 1970 to 1997, representing the constituencies of Merton and Morden (1970–74) and Plymouth Drake (1974–97). She was a Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons from 1992 to 1997, and presently is a Deputy Speaker in the House of Lords. Biography Fookes was educated at Royal Holloway College, University of London. She worked as a teacher from 1958 to 1970. She served as a Councillor on Hastings Borough Council from 1960 to 1961, and 1963–70. Fookes was elected a Member of Parliament (MP) representing Merton and Morden in 1970. Hubert Moses Medland
Hubert Moses Medland (1 July 1881 – 11 December 1964) was a British Labour Party politician. Born in Okehampton, Medland was educated at Tavistock Grammar School before becoming a civil servant. He also joined the Labour Party, and served on Plymouth City Council from 1923, including a term as Lord Mayor of Plymouth in 1935. He stood unsuccessfully in Torquay at both the 1929 and 1931 United Kingdom general elections. In 1938, he became the president of the British Waterworks Association, and during World War II he was the civil defence regional commissioner for the south west. Lieutenant-Colonel Christian Henry Charles Guest (15 February 1874 – 9 October 1957), usually known as Henry Guest, was a Liberal Party politician in the United Kingdom. Family He was the second son of Ivor Guest, 1st Baron Wimborne and his wife Lady Cornelia Henrietta Maria Spencer-Churchill, an aunt of the future Prime Minister Winston Churchill. His elder brother Ivor Churchill Guest was one of the last Lord-Lieutenants of Ireland, and his younger brothers Frederick Guest and Oscar Guest were also members of parliament. In 1911, he married the Honourable Frances Lyttelton (1885–1918), daughter of the 8th Viscount Cobham. They had one son, John Guest (1913–1997). Frederick Edward Guest
Frederick Edward "Freddie" Guest, (14 June 1875 – 28 April 1937) was a British politician best known for being Chief Whip of Prime Minister David Lloyd George's Coalition Liberal Party, 1917–1921. He was also Secretary of State for Air between 1921 and 1922. He won the bronze medal with the British polo team at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. Early life Frederick Edward Guest was born in London, the third son of Ivor Guest, 1st Baron Wimborne (1835–1914) and Lady Cornelia Spencer-Churchill (1847–1927). The Guest family had made its fortune in the iron and steel industry during the 18th and 19th centuries and had married into the aristocracy. The Labour Party is a political party in the United Kingdom that has been described as an alliance of social democrats, democratic socialists and trade unionists. James John Hamlyn Moses
James John Hamlyn Moses (14 August 1873 – 28 May 1946) was an English politician who served as mayor and later MP for Plymouth. Personal life Moses was born in Dartmouth, Devon, the son of James J. H. Moses, a shipwright, and Susannah L. Peek. He was educated at the Board School, Dartmouth and started work part-time at the age of nine as a newspaper boy. He became a full-time errand boy at the age of thirteen. He took an apprenticeship in the trade of shipbuilding at fifteen. He entered HM Dockyard, Devonport in 1895. He married Agnes Ferris in 1897. He lived at 95 Alexandra Road, Devonport. He was a temperance worker and local preacher. He was Methodist from 1891.
