Please Help The Cause Against Loneliness
"Please Help the Cause Against Loneliness" is a song by British singer Sandie Shaw and the first single from her 1988 album '' Hello Angel''. Having released a string of hit singles in the 1960s, Shaw had semi-retired from public life in the early 1970s and had released only a few records with minimal publicity since. "Please Help the Cause Against Loneliness" was the first single to be released from the album, and was written by Morrissey and producer Stephen Street. Morrissey also recorded a demo for his first original album, which was not officially released until the 2010 expanded reissue of Morrissey's ''Bona Drag ''Bona Drag'' is a compilation album by Morrissey released on 15 October 1990. Hello Angel
''Hello Angel'' is the seventh and final studio album by British singer Sandie Shaw, released in 1988. Album background Shaw had released a couple of singles in the late 1970s on the CBS label, but did not show a serious interest in making additional material until the early 1980s, when new husband Nik Powell (co-founder of the Virgin Group) introduced her to the B.E.F. (British Electric Foundation). Shaw recorded an updated version of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David classic " Anyone Who Had a Heart" for their ''Music of Quality and Distinction'' album, which was subsequently released as a single. Shaw learned that her earlier work had influenced musicians like Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, and she was invited to join Hynde on stage during one of their concerts to perform one of their songs with them. She and Hynde also sang a duet of Shaw's Top 3 hit from 1964, " Girl Don't Come". An album was discussed with Virgin Records, who had released the B.E.F.'s album, but Shaw becam ...

Pop Music
Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form during the mid-1950s in the United States and the United Kingdom. The terms ''popular music'' and ''pop music'' are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular and includes many disparate styles. During the 1950s and 1960s, pop music encompassed rock and roll and the youth-oriented styles it influenced. ''Rock'' and ''pop'' music remained roughly synonymous until the late 1960s, after which ''pop'' became associated with music that was more commercial, ephemeral, and accessible. Although much of the music that appears on record charts is considered to be pop music, the genre is distinguished from chart music. Identifying factors usually include repeated choruses and hooks, short to medium-length songs written in a basic format (often the verse-chorus structure), and rhythms or tempos that can be easily danced to. Much pop music also borrows elements from other styles ...

Rough Trade Records
Rough Trade Records is an independent record label based in London, England. It was formed in 1976 by Geoff Travis who had opened a record store off Ladbroke Grove. Having successfully promoted and sold records by punk rock and early post-punk and indie pop bands such as the Normal and Desperate Bicycles, Travis began to manage acts and distribute bands such as Scritti Politti and began the label, which was informed by left-wing politics and structured as a co-operative. Soon after, Rough Trade also set up a distribution arm that serviced independent retail outlets across Britain, a network that became known as the Cartel. In 1983, Rough Trade signed the Smiths. Interest and investment of major labels in the UK indie scene in the late 1980s, as well as overtrading on behalf of Rough Trade's distribution wing, led to cash flow problems, and eventually to bankruptcy, forcing the label into receivership. However, Travis resurrected the label in the late 1990s, finding success w ...

Morrissey
Steven Patrick Morrissey (; born 22 May 1959), known professionally as Morrissey, is an English singer and songwriter. He came to prominence as the frontman and lyricist of rock band the Smiths, who were active from 1982 to 1987. Since then, he has pursued a successful solo career. Morrissey's music is characterised by his baritone voice and distinctive lyrics with recurring themes of emotional isolation, sexual longing, self-deprecating and dark humour, and anti-establishment stances. Born to working-class Irish immigrants in Davyhulme, Lancashire, Morrissey grew up in nearby Manchester. As a child, he developed a love of literature, kitchen sink realism, and 1960s pop music. In the late 1970s, he fronted punk rock band the Nosebleeds with little success before beginning a career in music journalism and writing several books on music and film in the early 1980s. He formed the Smiths with Johnny Marr in 1982 and the band soon attracted national recognition for their epo ...

Frederick (song)
"Frederick" is a song written by Patti Smith, and released as lead single from Patti Smith Group 1979 album ''Wave''. The song is dedicated to Fred "Sonic" Smith, guitar player of the Detroit band MC5 and Smith's future husband. The melody of "Frederick" is a homage to Bruce Springsteen's live arrangement of " Prove It All Night" from the then-recent Darkness Tour of 1978. Reception ''Smash Hits'' said, "Patti has been getting a lot of stick from her original admirers for 'selling out' and going pop. I think they're being short-sighted (not to mention cloth-eared). This is an excellent sample of her new work with producer Todd Rundgren." Covers The song was covered by Sandie Shaw in 1986. The B-side was entitled "Go Johnny Go", and had been written by Shaw as a tribute to Johnny Marr. Nothing Less Than Brilliant (song)
"Nothing Less Than Brilliant" is the final single by British singer Sandie Shaw, and the second single from her '' Hello Angel'' album. Shaw initially became a star in the 1960s when she scored eight Top 10 singles in the UK alone, including three Number Ones (a first for a female), and became the first British act to win the Eurovision Song Contest. She had semi-retired from public life in the early 1970s, after being dropped from Pye Records in 1972 after issuing a series of non-charting singles. Although she had released a handful of non-charting singles from 1977 on, she made a proper comeback in 1984 when Morrissey and Johnny Marr of The Smiths persuaded her to cover their song " Hand in Glove", which became her first top 40 chart hit in 15 years. More singles followed and in 1988 she released the '' Hello Angel'' album. "Nothing Less Than Brilliant" was remixed slightly and became the second and final single to be released from it. It was written by Shaw herself alongsid ...

Bona Drag
''Bona Drag'' is a compilation album by Morrissey released on 15 October 1990. The album features an array of Morrissey's most popular songs from his early solo career, most of which had not been released on any previous album. The album name meaning ''nice outfits'' is an example of the subculture slang Polari explored further on the album's first track "Piccadilly Palare". The album was certified Gold by the RIAA on 6 December 2000. In 2010, the album was remastered and expanded to include six bonus tracks. Background After releasing ''Viva Hate'' in March 1988, Morrissey modified his method of releasing music. Instead of choosing to produce an immediate follow-up album, he decided to release a string of independent singles in the hopes of achieving success in that market. Morrissey initially planned to release a second album after releasing a few holdover singles. As such, he released "The Last of the Famous International Playboys", "Interesting Drug", and "Ouija Board, Ou ...
