Plaza De La HerrerÃa
The Plaza de la HerrerÃa (Blacksmith's square) is a large square located on the edge of the old town of Pontevedra (Spain), inside the old city walls. It is the main square of the old town and has an area of about 2,000 m2. It includes the small squares of the Estrella on the north side, the Orense square on the south side and the Casto Sampedro square on the east side, making a total of almost 5,000 m2. Origin of the name The square takes its name from the forges that were located there in the Middle Ages, since the Catholic Monarchs decreed certain orders to arm the Spanish knights with arms from Pontevedra and Oviedo. History The first references to the square date from between 1325 and 1330. In the Middle Ages it was known as the Plaza de Trabancas, and it took on the name of HerrerÃa around 1820 in memory of the old craftsmen and Blacksmiths who lived there, who made all sorts of weapons and iron instruments and who became famous throughout the country. The Casa de las Caras (House of the Heads), also known as the ''Pazo de Barbeito y Padrón'', is a 16th-century building in the heart of the historic centre of Pontevedra, Spain. It is known as the House of the Heads because of the Renaissance busts that decorate its façade on the upper floor. Juan Barbeito y Padrón at the end of the 16th century to serve as his home. Later, it became the property of D. Pedro Aldao, a brave military man, Grandmaster of Campo. The Convent of St. Francis (Spanish: San Francisco) is a Franciscan convent located in the city centre of Pontevedra (Spain), overlooking the Plaza de la HerrerÃa. The Gothic church of San Francis is attached to the convent on the southeast side. History According to tradition, the convent was founded by Francis of Assisi, who stopped in Pontevedra when he was on the Portuguese Way to Santiago de Compostela. Church Of The Pilgrim Virgin
The church of the Pilgrim Virgin is a scallop-shaped chapel located in the city of Pontevedra, in Spain, along the route of the Portuguese Way of St. James. Construction began in 1778 and it is one of the most symbolic and important buildings in the city of Pontevedra. It is dedicated to the Virgin who, according to tradition, guided pilgrims from Bayona, in the south-west of the province of Pontevedra, to Santiago de Compostela. The church houses the image of the Pilgrim Virgin (19th century), patron saint of the province of Pontevedra and, in turn, of the Portuguese Way. Declared a historic-artistic monument in 1982, it is a mixture of late Baroque and Neoclassical forms, such as its main altarpiece, erected in 1789.
