Plaza De España, Madrid
is a large square and popular tourist destination located in central Madrid, Spain at the western end of the Gran Vía. It features a monument to Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and is adjacent to two of Madrid's most prominent skyscrapers. Additionally, the Palacio Real (Royal Palace) is only a short walk south from the plaza. After a two and a half years of renovation, on 22 November 2021, the square was reopened for pedestrians. Cervantes Monument Right in the center of the square is the monument to Miguel de Cervantes, created at the same time as the square itself. Around the monument, a series of landscaped spaces were created for the enjoyment and rest of passers-by. Monument To Miguel De Cervantes
The Monument to Miguel de Cervantes is an instance of public art located in Madrid, Spain. Erected on the centre of the , it is dedicated to Miguel de Cervantes, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language. The monument incorporates a stone monolith with several statues (including Cervantes') and a detached bronze sculptural group representing Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. History and description In 1915, a year before the 300th anniversary of the writer's death, a public contest was announced in order to award the project. The announcement was met with concern among certain reviewers. The winning project was awarded to a dark horse proposal by Rafael Martínez Zapatero and Lorenzo Coullaut Valera that had been derided as overly literary, detail-oriented and anecdotal. La Mancha () is a natural and historical region located in the Spanish provinces of Albacete, Cuenca, Ciudad Real, and Toledo. ''A los héroes del dos de mayo'' or ''Al pueblo del dos de mayo de 1808'' is an instance of public art in Madrid, Spain. A sculptural work by Aniceto Marinas, the monument is an homage to the role of the Madrilenian people during the 1808 Dos de mayo uprising. History and description Originally sculpted in Rome by Aniceto Marinas in 1891, the sculptural group depicts a winged statue holding a banner that emerges on top of a soldier, a cannon, a small boy and a number of corpses, male and female alike. The ensemble was inaugurated in the morning of 4 May 1808 at its original location on the (''glorieta de San Bernardo''), with the (Mayor of Madrid) and Antonio Maura (Prime Minister) intervening as speakers in the ceremony, and Alfonso XIII eventually proceeding to unveil the monument. Dos De Mayo Uprising
On the 2 and 3 May 1808 the Dos de Mayo or Second of May Uprising of 1808 took place in Madrid, Spain. It was a rebellion by civilians alongside some military against the occupation of the city by French troops, provoking a heavy-hand repression by the French Imperial forces. Background The city had been under the occupation of Napoleon's army since 23 March of the same year. King Charles IV had been forced by the Spanish people during the Tumult of Aranjuez to abdicate in favor of his son Ferdinand VII, and at the time of the uprising both were in the French city of Bayonne at the insistence of Napoleon. An attempt by the French general Joachim Murat to move the daughter and her children along with the youngest son of Charles IV to Bayonne sparked a rebellion. Príncipe Pío (hill)
The montaña del Príncipe Pío is a hill in the western part of Madrid, Spain. Background It is named after prince Gisberto Pío de Saboya, a member of the Pio di Savoia family, whose wife Juana de Moura owned property there. Later, barracks (''Cuartel de la Montaña'') were constructed there. The Madrilene rebels who fought the Napoleonic invaders were executed there on the morning of 3 May 1808, as painted by Francisco de Goya. Around the 1960s, the barracks were demolished to make room for the Parque del Oeste. Line 2 of the Madrid Metro is a rapid transit line in Madrid. It first opened on 11 June 1924 and originally ran between and stations. History Line 2 was extended from Sol to on 27 December 1925, and then further to on 1 September 1929. In 1932, a branch from Goya to was added, though this branch was transferred to Line 4 in 1958. Line 10 of the Madrid Metro is a rapid transit line in Madrid that is actually the product of two formerly separate lines. Today the route begins at (San Sebastián de los Reyes) and ends at (Alcorcón).
