In 1881 he received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the University of Kiel. The botanical genera of liverwort The Marchantiophyta () are a division of non-vascular land plants commonly referred to as hepatics or liverworts. Like mosses and hornworts, they have a gametophyte-dominant life cycle, in which cells of the plant carry only a single set of ...s; '' Gottschea'' in the family Schistochilaceae is named after him, as well as '' Gottschelia'', which is in the family Cephaloziellaceae.
