Piña ( ) is a traditional Philippine fiber made from the leaves of the pineapple plant. Pineapples are indigenous to South America but have been widely cultivated in the Philippines since the 17th century, and used for weaving lustrous lace-like luxury textiles known as '' nipis'' fabric. The name is derived from Spanish ''piña'', meaning "pineapple". In February 2018, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, along with the government of Aklan, began the process of nominating Kalibo piña weaving in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. History Pineapples were introduced by the Spanish to the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. Mariano Piña Olaya ( Champusco, Puebla, March 29, 1933) is a Mexican politician who served as the Governor of Puebla from 1987 to 1993. Career Piña Olaya studied the law in the National Autonomous University of Mexico. As a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party he served as Federal Deputy in the LII Legislature from 1982 to 1985, in which he occupied the position of President of the Great Commission. Piña Olaya became governor of the State of Puebla in 1987 and served until 1993, but was viewed as weak and unpopular. The piña colada (; es, piña , "pineapple", and , "strained") is a cocktail made with rum, cream of coconut or coconut milk, and pineapple juice, usually served either blended or shaken with ice. It may be garnished with either a pineapple wedge, maraschino cherry, or both. There are two versions of the drink, both originating in Puerto Rico. Etymology The name ''piña colada'' (Spanish) literally means "strained pineapple", a reference to the freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice used in the drink's preparation. History The earliest known story states that in the 19th century, Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí, to boost his crew's morale, gave them a beverage or cocktail that contained coconut, pineapple and white rum. This was what would be later known as the famous piña colada. With his death in 1825, the recipe for the piña colada was lost. Historian Haydée Reichard disputes this version of the story.
