Piute Creek (Tuolumne River Tributary)
Piute Creek is a long stream in northern Yosemite National Park, in Tuolumne County, California. It is a major tributary of the Tuolumne River, draining a rugged and remote area of the Sierra Nevada. The creek begins at an unnamed lake near Burro Pass and Matterhorn Peak, flowing west then southwest into Slide Canyon. Here, it briefly flows underground through a fallen talus pile known as "The Slide". Below Slide Canyon it receives Camp Creek and Rock Creek then descends steeply southwest into Benson Lake. After emerging from the southern end of the lake it flows through an area known as Pleasant Valley, where it passes the smaller Saddle Horse, Irwin Bright and Table Lakes, then drops over a long series of cascading waterfalls into the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne. Matterhorn Peak
Matterhorn Peak is located in the Sierra Nevada (U.S.), Sierra Nevada, in California, at the northern boundary of Yosemite National Park. At elevation, it is the tallest peak in the craggy Alps-like Sawtooth Ridge and the northernmost peak in the Sierra Nevada. The peak also supports the Sierra's northernmost glacier system. It was named after the Matterhorn in the Alps. Matterhorn Peak is near Twin Peaks (Yosemite), Twin Peaks, and just north of Whorl Mountain (Yosemite), Whorl Mountain. The peak can be ascended without climbing gear. In popular culture Jack Kerouac, in ''The Dharma Bums'' (1958), describes a hike up and a run down the mountain. Hetch Hetchy Reservoir
Hetch Hetchy is a valley, a reservoir, and a water system in California in the United States. The glacial Hetch Hetchy Valley lies in the northwestern part of Yosemite National Park and is drained by the Tuolumne River. For thousands of years before the arrival of settlers from the United States in the 1850s, the valley was inhabited by Native Americans who practiced subsistence hunting-gathering. During the late 19th century, the valley was renowned for its natural beauty – often compared to that of Yosemite Valley – but also targeted for the development of water supply for irrigation and municipal interests. The controversy over damming Hetch Hetchy became mired in the political issues of the day. The law authorizing the dam passed Congress on December 7, 1913. Grand Canyon Of The Tuolumne
The Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne is the notable canyon section of the river valley of the Tuolumne River, located within Yosemite National Park, in Tuolumne County and the Sierra Nevada, California. As defined by the United States Geological Survey, the canyon begins at Glen Aulin and ends directly above Hetch Hetchy Valley. Geography The Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne starts at Glen Aulin, immediately below the confluence of Cold Canyon, Conness Creek, and the Tuolumne River. Here, the valley walls pull away from each other and become steeper. The water meanders and forms deep pools. Scree is a collection of broken rock fragments at the base of a cliff or other steep rocky mass that has accumulated through periodic rockfall. Landforms associated with these materials are often called talus deposits. Tuolumne County (), officially the County of Tuolumne, is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 55,620. The county seat and only incorporated city is Sonora. Tuolumne County comprises the Sonora, CA Micropolitan Statistical Area. The county is in the Sierra Nevada region.
