The Pittsburgh Current is a free weekly alternative newspaper in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The paper is distributed on Wednesdays and covers local news and arts. It was founded in 2018 by Charlie Deitch to promote Freedom of the press claiming his former employer Pittsburgh City Paper engaged in censorship. History Founding The paper was founded by Charlie Deitch, former editor-in-chief of Pittsburgh City Paper. He alleges his May 15, 2018 firing was a result of his criticism of politician Daryl Metcalfe. The article in question, "Pennsylvania Rep. Daryl Metcalfe has Proven Himself Unfit for Office" ran on May 2, 2018. The City Paper staff, which included Deitch, brought harsh criticism against Metcalfe, 'his opinions and beliefs to be racist, xenophobic, close-minded and full of general numb-skullery'. A tabloid is a newspaper with a compact page size smaller than broadsheet. There is no standard size for this newspaper format. Etymology The word ''tabloid'' comes from the name given by the London-based pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome & Co. to the compressed tablets they marketed as "Tabloid" pills in the late 1880s. The connotation of ''tabloid'' was soon applied to other small compressed items. The ''Butler Eagle'' is a daily newspaper published in Butler, Pennsylvania, United States. It serves the Pittsburgh metropolitan county of Butler. History The conservative family owned paper was founded in 1903 with the merging of the ''Butler County Observer'' (originally the ''Evans City Times'') and the original ''Butler Eagle''.
