PitchCom
PitchCom is a wireless communication system used in baseball that lets a player request pitches without using visible signals. Major League Baseball (MLB) approved the use of PitchCom before the start of the 2022 season with the intentions of deterring sign stealing and quickening the pace of play. History Catchers traditionally request pitches with finger signs, but these can be stolen (see sign stealing) by a man on base and relayed to the batter. Therefore, when a runner reaches second base, the catcher commonly visits the pitcher to change signs, delaying the game. The technology used in PitchCom was invented by John Hankins and Craig Filcetti to provide cues at magic shows. Their company asked MLB to consider adopting the technology in 2020. In baseball, sign stealing is the act of observing the signs being signaled by the opposing catcher to the pitcher or a coach, and the subsequent relaying of those signals to members of one's own team. Sign stealing is done with the intent of gaining advance knowledge of the upcoming pitch and communicating it to the batter, thereby giving them an advantage. Legal sign stealing typically involves the signs being observed by a runner on second base and then relayed to the batter through some sort of gesture. Illegal sign stealing involves mechanical or electronic technology; the rules regarding this have become more stringent over time and continue to evolve. 2022 Major League Baseball Season
The 2022 Major League Baseball season (MLB) was originally scheduled to begin on March 31 and end on October 2. The 2021–22 MLB lockout caused the season to be delayed by one week, starting on April 7. The regular season ended on October 5. Pace of play is an issue concerning college baseball and professional baseball regarding the length of games. Background Game length in Major League Baseball (MLB) has increased over time, with the 1988 New York Yankees being the first team to average over three hours per game. From 2004 through 2014, MLB games increased from an average of 2.85 hours to 3.13 hours. This was in spite of decreases in scoring, with MLB teams scoring 4.1 runs per game in 2014, down from 5.14 in 2000. The amount of time a pitcher takes between pitches directly affects pace of play, and varies widely. Jose Ramón Trevino (born November 28, 1992) is an American professional baseball catcher for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played in MLB for the Texas Rangers. The Rangers selected Trevino in the sixth round of the 2014 MLB draft out of Oral Roberts University. He made his MLB debut in 2018 with the Rangers, who traded him to the Yankees before the 2022 season. In baseball, a stolen base occurs when a runner advances to a base to which they are not entitled and the official scorer rules that the advance should be credited to the action of the runner.
