''Sid Meier's Pirates!'' is a video game created by Sid Meier for the Commodore 64 and published by MicroProse in 1987. It was the first game to include the name "Sid Meier" in its title as an effort by MicroProse to attract fans of Meier's earlier games, most of which were combat vehicle simulation video games. The game is a simulation of the life of a pirate, a privateer, or a pirate hunter in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. It was widely ported to other systems. ''Pirates!'' is set in the Caribbean. The ''Pirates!'' playing field includes the Spanish Main (namely the northern coast of South America), Central America and the Yucatán Peninsula, the entire Gulf of Mexico, Florida, and all Caribbean islands, plus Bermuda. ''Pirates! Gold'' is a 1993 computer game, a remake to Sid Meier's 1987 in video gaming, 1987 release, ''Sid Meier's Pirates!''. Development MicroProse developed this 256-color version for MS-DOS, Apple Macintosh, Macintosh, Sega Genesis, Amiga CD32 and Windows 3.1x, Windows 3.x featuring a MIDI score and computer mouse, mouse support (in MS-DOS and Windows versions). Gameplay ''Pirates! Gold'' features Super VGA graphics including hand-painted screens, and a more-detailed playing environment than the original. ''Sid Meier's Pirates!'' (also known as ''Sid Meier's Pirates!: Live the Life'') is a 2004 Strategy game, strategy, Action game, action and Adventure game, adventure video game developed by Firaxis Games. A Video game remake, remake of Sid Meier's earlier 1987 Sid Meier's Pirates!, game of the same name, it was originally published by Atari Interactive but in May 2005 2K Games announced they had acquired the rights to the title from Atari's parent company Infogrames and later went on to publish console and handheld ports of the game. Overall, the gameplay remains similar to the original game, though it features a 3D computer graphics, 3D game engine (NDL's Gamebryo). Some elements such as sun sighting have been removed but other features have been added, such as a ballroom dancing mini-game and an improved turn-based land combat system.
