The Pioneros de Quintana Roo (''Quintana Roo Pioneers'' in English) are a Mexican professional basketball team based in Cancún, México playing in Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP). During the 2010–2011 season the team made it to the finals. They became subchampions after losing to the Toros de Nuevo Laredo. The National Professional Basketball League ( or LNBP) is the top professional basketball league in Mexico. The league was founded in 2000 with 10 teams. Despite its short history, the LNBP has established itself as the one of the most important basketball leagues in Latin America. Boubacar Aw
Boubacar Richard Aw (born June 22, 1975) is a Senegalese former professional basketball player. After growing up in Thiès, Aw moved to the United States in 1993 and he played high school basketball in Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina; he then went on to play 4 years in college at Georgetown. After graduating from college, Aw had a 10-year professional career in Central and South America. He was also a member of the Senegalese national basketball team, with which he won the gold medal during the 1997 FIBA Africa Championship and participated in the 1998 FIBA World Championship. After retiring from playing basketball, Aw has become a teacher and youth basketball coach. Horacio Llamas Grey (born July 17, 1973) is a Mexican former professional basketball player. He played two seasons with the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA), becoming the first Mexican-born player in NBA history. Early years Llamas was born in El Rosario, Sinaloa, Mexico, the first child of Horacio and Ana Luisa Llamas. He practiced karate from the age of two, followed by baseball, and did not begin playing basketball until he was 15. Polifórum Benito Juárez
The Polifórum Benito Juárez a 5,800-seat indoor arena in Cancún, Quintana Roo, was built in just 128 days in 2008. It was built as the home of the Pioneros de Quintana Roo basketball team. The arena was built of reinforced concrete in order to withstand hurricanes that may come through the Yucatán Peninsula. It can also serve a shelter in case of a natural disaster. In addition to serving as home of the Pioneros and as a shelter for natural disasters, the Polifórum is also used for concerts, other sporting events, and other special events. It is also unusual in that its center-hung scoreboard does not include video screens, a must for most new arenas in the 21st century. There are 2,200 permanent seats.
