Pioneers' Obelisk (Montreal)
The Pioneers' Monument Obelisk is a monument in Old Montreal. Overview The granite obelisk commemorates the founding of Fort Ville-Marie, later to become Montreal close to this spot on May 17, 1642. The monument was erected by the Société historique de Montréal to celebrate the city's 250th birthday. The obelisk is made from a block of granite that stands tall and is square at its base. It took 40 horses to drag the shaft into the city in 1893. The monument was unveiled on May 17, 1894. It has been moved a number of times before it was placed in its present location in 1999. It made its debut somewhat west of its present location. In the 1940s it moved again, to the old Customs House. The monument's present location is believed to be where Montreal's first mass was held. Place D'Youville (Montreal)
The Place d'Youville in Old Montreal is a historical square in Montreal, named after Marguerite d'Youville. The roads from the Place Royale and McGill Street meet at this point. The square is notable as the site of St. Anne's Market, a market building that once housed the Legislative Council and Assembly of Canada between 1844 and 1849, when it was burned down on April 25, 1849. History It was near to this spot, previously crossed by the Saint-Pierre river, that the first European inhabitants of Montreal arrived in 1642. Soon after, this frequently flooded area was abandoned in favour of the hill overlooking rue Notre-Dame. Jean-Baptiste Legardeur De Repentigny
Jean-Baptiste Legardeur de Repentigny, (1632-1709) was born at Thury-Harcourt in Normandy in 1632, and died in Montreal on September 9, 1709. He was esquire, midshipman, and councillor in the Conseil Souverain. He was the son of Pierre Legardeur de Repentigny and Marie Favery. Jean-Baptiste Legardeur arrived in Canada in 1636 with his parents. He became associated with the fur trade at an early age. On October 6, 1663, he was elected the first mayor of Quebec City. He occupied this office for only one month, since the Conseil Souverain considered it unnecessary. He received from his mother the ''seigneury of Repentigny'' on May 2, 1670, which had been granted by the Compagnie de la Nouvelle France in 1647 to his father. Marie-Madeleine de Chauvigny de la Peltrie (1603 – 18 November 1671) was a French woman who started the Order of Ursulines of Quebec. Chauvigny, Marie-Madeleine de (Gruel de La Peltrie), secular founder of the Ursulines of Quebec, born in Alençon (France) in 1603, daughter of Guillaume de Chauvigny, lord of the said place and of Vaubougon, and of Damsel Jeanne Du Bouchet, deceased in Quebec on November 18, 1671.
