Pilsen Neighbors Community Council
Pilsen Neighbors Community Council is a grassroots organization that was founded in 1954. Its organizing efforts focus on civil rights issues such as education, health care, housing and immigration reform. They are responsible for ground breaking events in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. PNCC was the lead organization in helping build Alivio Medical Center, that is now a very important institution in the Pilsen neighborhood. They are also instrumental in the building of Benito Juarez High School. PNCC focuses on developing new community leaders through its network of "Core Teams". PNCC has worked in alliance with Churches, other community-based organizations and schools to make its voice heard on a path to citizenship, education funding reform, economic development, and universal healthcare. Lower West Side is a community area on the West Side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. It is three miles southwest of the Chicago Loop and its main neighborhood is Pilsen (). The Heart of Chicago is a neighborhood in the southwest corner of the Lower West Side. History In the late 19th century, Pilsen was inhabited by German, Polish, Italian, and Czech immigrants. Czech immigrants were the most prominent and named the district after Plzeň, the fourth largest city in what is now the Czech Republic. They replaced the Germans and Irish who had settled there before them, in the mid-nineteenth century. These German and Irish residents lived in poor conditions throughout the 1850s and ‘60s. The Pilsen area was overcrowded and suffered from flooding, lack of indoor plumbing, and illness. Benito Juarez High School
Benito Juarez Community Academy, (commonly known as Juarez High School), is a public 4–year high school in the Pilsen neighborhood on the west side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. Juarez is named for Mexican president Benito Pablo Juárez García. The school is a part of the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) district. As of 2014 it is the largest high school in Pilsen. It was designed by architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez. The school was proposed to the Chicago Board of Education multiple times but ultimately rejected. This led to protests and boycotts from many Mexican students and families. Finally, in June 1974, the Chicago Board of Education approved $8.9 million in funding to build a high school in Pilsen. Benito Juarez Community Academy opened in 1977 and as of 2017 has a 94 percent Latino student body. The school is decorated with murals and statues that portray Mexican culture and famous leaders. Teresa Fraga
Teresa Fraga is a Mexican-born teacher, community organizer, and activist in Pilsen, Chicago.Teresa Fraga Papers'' DePaul University Special Collections and Archives. Accessed February 7, 2017 She is an executive board member and the treasurer of Pilsen Neighbors Community Council (PNCC), and the co-chair of the Pilsen Planning Committee. Early life Teresa Fraga was born in a tent near a construction project in Zacatecas, Mexico, around 1943. She moved to the United States with her family when she was seven years old. Fraga worked as a migrant farm worker around the United States, then moved to Chicago with her husband, Refugio, and children in 1966. They settled in the Pilsen neighborhood, and bought a home there in 1981. Public life Raising six children, Fraga was concerned with crime, drugs, and inadequate schools in Pilsen.
