Pili (TV Series)
''Pili'' (Traditional Chinese: 霹靂, Pe̍h-oē-jī: Phek-le̍k, "Thunderbolt") is a glove puppetry show from Taiwan. It is made by Pili International Multimedia. The TV series debuted in 1984, and it still continues today. It is one of the most popular TV shows in Taiwan. Unlike traditional puppet shows, ''Pili'' uses computer generated imagery (CGI) during action sequences. The delicate design of the appearance and characteristics of each puppet has made ''Pili'' a well-known TV series in Taiwan. In 2000, the spin-off film ''Legend of the Sacred Stone'' was released. It was released on VHS and DVD in Taiwan and Japan (the Japanese edit significantly shortened). The Japanese release includes some unintentionally funny English subtitles, while the Taiwanese release has no English, so the only imports and bootlegs of the film generally found in North America have been of the Japanese version. Glove Puppetry
Glove puppetry () is a type of opera using cloth puppets that originated during the 17th century in Quanzhou or Zhangzhou of China's Fujian province, and historically practised in the Min Nan-speaking areas such as Quanzhou, Zhangzhou, the Chaoshan region of Guangdong, and other parts of southern China. It had since established itself contemporarily as a popular art form in Taiwan. The puppet's head uses wood carved into the shape of a hollow human head, but aside from the head, palms, and feet, which are made of wood, the puppet's torso and limbs consist entirely of cloth costumes. At the time of the performance, a gloved hand enters the puppet's costume and makes it perform. In previous years the puppets used in this type of performance strongly resembled "cloth sacks," hence the name, which literally means "cloth bag opera." Huang Hai-tai (; 2 January 1901 – 11 February 2007) was a Taiwanese Glove puppetry, puppeteer. Born on 2 January 1901, Huang learned the art of puppetry from his father and another puppeteer. He was also trained in beiguan music. Huang renamed his father's troupe Wuzhouyuan, and developed his own stories and characters, most notably Shi Yan-yun. At the start of his career, Taiwan was under Taiwan under Japanese rule, Japanese rule, and Huang was limited to public performances that used the Japanese language and portrayed Japanese customs. However, Huang's secretly held private shows told traditional and historic Chinese tales, several of which he had read while in training. Over time, Huang became renowned as a national treasure.
