Confrerie Pictura
The Confrerie Pictura was a more or less academic club of artists founded in 1656 in The Hague (the Netherlands) by local art painters, who were unsatisfied by the Guild of Saint Luke there. History The guild of St. Luke in the Hague existed already in the 15th century and like most large Dutch cities, it catered not just to painters, but were united also with glaziers, engravers, sculptors, goldsmiths, printers and book sellers. In those days guilds were represented in churches with their own altars, and in the case of the painters' guild, they were sponsored by the church, and sometimes even ensured an income for church fathers through donations to the St. Luke's altar. After the Protestant Reformation, this all changed, and the churches were no longer a part of guild life. Susanna De La Croix
Susanna de La Croix (1755–1789) was a Dutch painter. De la Croix was baptized on 3 January 1756 in the Oude Waalse Kerk in Amsterdam as Susanne, daughter of French painter Pierre Frédéric de la Croix and Marie Regnier. The family lived alternately in Amsterdam and The Hague. In 1775, she married the painter and poet Jan van Os (1744–1808) in The Hague. From this marriage seven children were born, among whom Pieter Gerardus (1776–1839), Maria Margaretha (1780–1862) and Georgius Jacobus Johannes van Os (1782–1861), who also became painters. De la Croix was probably trained by her father. She made "excellent portraits with black chalk", among other things. Scheen states that she was deaf-mute. It is known that her father was deaf-mute but the assumption that she would also be is probably a mistake following a mention at Van Eynden and Van der Willigen. Jan Van Os
Jan van Os (23 February 1744 – 7 February 1808) was a Dutch painter and a member of the renowned Van Os family of artists. Biography Van Os was born in Middelharnis. He was taught by Aert Schouman in The Hague, where he would spend the rest of his life. In 1773, he recorded in the painters' confraternity. In 1775, he married Susanna de La Croix, an able pastellist and the daughter of the deaf-mute portraitist Pieter Frederik de la Croix. Van Os is mostly known for his fruit and flower still life paintings, though he started his career painting seascapes. His floral still lifes were painted in the style of Jan van Huysum, with the flowers usually presented on a marble ledge against a green background.
