Pierce M. Barron
Pierce M. Barron (c. 1830 – November 4, 1887) was a tavern owner and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented St. John's West from 1859 to 1861 and Placentia and St. Mary's from 1861 to 1869 in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly as a Liberal. He was born in St. John's. He owned a tavern in St. John's. He was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1869 as a Conservative. After he retired from politics, Barron was a customs officer at St. John's. Newfoundland Colony was an English and, later, British colony established in 1610 on the island of Newfoundland off the Atlantic coast of Canada, in what is now the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. That followed decades of sporadic English settlement on the island, which was at first seasonal, rather than permanent. It was made a Crown colony in 1824 and a Dominion in 1907. Its economy collapsed during the Great Depression of the 1930s, and Newfoundland relinquished its dominion status, effectively becoming once again a colony governed by appointees from the Colonial Office in Whitehall in London.
