Picton railway station was a railway station serving the village of Picton in North Yorkshire, England. Located on the Northallerton to Eaglescliffe Line (which is now the North TransPennine line) it was opened on 2 June 1852 by the Leeds Northern Railway. It closed to passengers on 4 January 1960 and closed completely in July 1964. History The station was located just north of the junction for the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Railway line to and on the Whitby & Pickering Railway. It was south of and north of . Local services started at the station with the opening of the Leeds Northern Railway and then along the Battersby line when the first section to opened in 1857. With the full opening of the line to Grosmont in 1865, four out and back services to Whitby per day were worked along the Battersby line. Hambleton District
Hambleton is a local government district in North Yorkshire, England. The administrative centre is Northallerton, and the district includes the outlying towns and villages of Bedale, Thirsk, Great Ayton, Stokesley, and Easingwold. Whitby & Pickering Railway
The Whitby and Pickering Railway (W&P) was built to halt the gradual decline of the port of Whitby on the east coast of England. Its basic industries—whaling and shipbuilding—had been in decline and it was believed that opening transport links inland would help regenerate the town and port. Until the turnpike to Pickering was opened in 1759, Whitby was better connected to the rest of the country by sea than by land; even then the difficult climb over the high moors was an obstacle. Stagecoach services did not start until 1795 and mail coaches (thrice weekly) until 1823. Northallerton–Eaglescliffe Line
The Northallerton–Eaglescliffe line runs between and stations. It connects the East Coast Main Line to the Tees Valley Line. Whitby is a railway station at the head of the Esk Valley Line, which runs between Middlesbrough and Whitby via Nunthorpe. The station, situated east of Grosmont, serves the seaside town of Whitby, Borough of Scarborough in North Yorkshire, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains. Stockton is a railway station on the Durham Coast Line, which runs between Newcastle and Middlesbrough via Hartlepool. The station, situated west of Middlesbrough, serves the market town of Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains. Thornaby railway station (known as "South Stockton" until 1892), across the River Tees from Stockton-on-Tees provides a wider range of services and acts as the main railway station for most of Stockton-on-Tees. The Picton–Battersby line was a railway line running from Picton, North Yorkshire, England, on what is now the Northallerton–Eaglescliffe line, to Battersby on what is now the Esk Valley line. History Construction The line was constructed by the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Railway (NY&C) between Picton (on the Leeds Northern's 1852 route between Northallerton and Stockton) and Grosmont.
