''Phoenix Rising'' (subtitled "''Coverdale • Hughes • Bolin • Paice • Lord''") is a combo CD/DVD live album by the Mark IV line-up of Deep Purple, released in May 2011. It includes rare live tracks from Mk IV history, '' Rises Over Japan'', a (30 minute) concert film directed by Tony Klinger, ''Gettin' Tighter'', an 80-minute new music documentary about the band's 1975/1976 tour, and some extras. Overview The concert film '' Rises Over Japan'' was made at Budokan Hall on 15 December 1975. The concert was released on LP in an incomplete form as ''Last Concert in Japan'' in 1977 and the whole concert was issued in 2001 as '' This Time Around: Live in Tokyo''. The footage was shot professionally with multiple cameras on 16mm film. Despite this, for many years only very poor quality bootleg copies from an obscure Japanese VHS release circulated among fans and collectors. Deep Purple
Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in London in 1968. They are considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal music, heavy metal and modern hard rock music, but their musical style has changed over the course of its existence. Originally formed as a psychedelic rock, psychedelic and progressive rock band, they shifted to a heavier sound with their 1970 album ''Deep Purple in Rock''. ''Last Concert in Japan'' is an album by Deep Purple released in March 1977 in Japan and in 1978 in Europe. Dedicated to Tommy Bolin, it records the last Japanese concert of the List of Deep Purple band members#.22Mark.22 numbers, Mark IV-lineup that included Bolin. It was recorded on 15 December 1975 at the Tokyo Nippon Budokan, Budokan and achieved gold certification in Japan. Background The performance drew 14,000 people, an attendance record for the Budokan Hall. Parts of the concert were also recorded on 16mm film and included in the video ''Rises Over Japan'', released in Japan in 1985. The recording was substantially edited to fit a single LP record, LP. "Burn" is a song by United Kingdom, British Rock music, rock band Deep Purple. It was released on Burn (Deep Purple album), the album of the same name in 1974, and was the first single by the Mark III lineup. History "Burn" served as the band's concert opener for the next two years, taking over from "Highway Star (song), Highway Star". It opened Deep Purple's televised set at the California Jam festival two months after its release, on 6 April 1974. ''Deep Purple in Concert'' is a live album by the English hard rock band Deep Purple, recorded by the BBC for their "In Concert" live series in 1970 and 1972. First released in 1980 in the UK, with the current US edition being made available in 2001. Album content Sides 1 and 2 of the LP (later the first CD) feature the live recording from the BBC Studios in London on 19 February 1970; the band stepped in at the last minute for Joe Cocker, who cancelled his scheduled appearance. DJ John Peel introduced the tracks as they were performed. Sides 3 and 4 of the LP (later the second CD) are the gig from 9 March 1972, this time with DJ Mike Harding as compere. ''Stormbringer'' is the ninth studio album by the English rock band Deep Purple, released in November 1974 and the second studio album to feature the Mk III lineup including vocalist David Coverdale and bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes. Album cover and title The cover image of ''Stormbringer'' is based on a photo. On 8 July 1927 a tornado near the town of Jasper, Minnesota was photographed by Lucille Handberg. Her photograph has become a classic image, and was used and edited for the album's cover. The same photograph was used for Miles Davis' album ''Bitches Brew'' in 1970 and Siouxsie and the Banshees' album ''Tinderbox'' in 1986. ''Stormbringer'' is the name of the second Elric of Melniboné novel by Michael Moorcock. ''Teaser'' is the 1975 debut solo album from American guitarist Tommy Bolin. Background ''Teaser'' was released in conjunction with the album '' Come Taste the Band'' by Deep Purple, on which Bolin also played guitar. Lazy (Deep Purple Song)
"Lazy" is a song by Deep Purple from their 1972 album ''Machine Head''. A live performance of the song can be found on the album '' Made in Japan'', released later the same year. The song starts out as an instrumental, keyboardist Jon Lord plays an overdriven Hammond organ intro, followed by the main riff and with the solo swapping between him and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Vocalist Ian Gillan comes in with the vocals later in the song. He also uses harmonica both on the studio version and live. At over 7 minutes long, it is the longest track on the album, and live versions were often extended past 10 minutes. The live version on '' Made in Japan'' features a theme from Hugo Alfvén's "Swedish Rhapsody #1", played by Ritchie Blackmore as a part of his solo. ''Machine Head'' is the sixth studio album released by the English rock band Deep Purple. It was recorded in December 1971 at Montreux, Switzerland, and released on 25 March 1972 on Purple Records. As previous recording sessions had been slotted into the group's gigging schedule, Deep Purple wanted to dedicate time to record an album away from the typical studio environment, hoping it would result in a sound closer to their live shows. They hired the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio for recording, and block-booked the Montreux Casino as a venue, but during a Frank Zappa concert immediately before the sessions, the casino burned to the ground. After a week of searching for an alternative venue, including a session at a nearby theatre that was abandoned due to noise complaints, the band managed to book the Grand Hotel, closed for the winter, and converted it into a live room suitable for recording. Georgia On My Mind
"Georgia on My Mind" is a 1930 song written by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell and first recorded that same year by Hoagy Carmichael. However, the song has been most often associated with soul singer Ray Charles, who was a native of the U.S. state of Georgia and recorded it for his 1960 album ''The Genius Hits the Road''. In 1979, the State of Georgia designated Ray Charles' version the official state song. The song has become part of the Great American Songbook tradition. ''Come Taste the Band'' is the tenth studio album by the English rock band Deep Purple, originally released in November 1975. It was co-produced and engineered by the band and longtime associate Martin Birch. It was the final Deep Purple studio record prior to the band's initial disbandment in 1976, therefore making it the only album to feature Tommy Bolin (who replaced Ritchie Blackmore on guitar), and the final of three albums to feature David Coverdale on lead vocals and Glenn Hughes on bass guitar/vocals: Bolin died shortly after the album's release, while neither Coverdale nor Hughes would be involved with the reactivated Deep Purple in 1984. ''Burn'' is the eighth studio album by the English Rock music, rock band Deep Purple, released in February 1974, and the first to feature then-unknown David Coverdale on vocals and Glenn Hughes (musician), Glenn Hughes, from Trapeze (band), Trapeze, on bass and vocals. Recording The album was recorded in Montreux, Switzerland, in November 1973, with the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio.
