Philodice (bird)
''Philodice'' is a genus of hummingbirds in the tribe Mellisugini and family Trochilidae. Taxonomy The genus ''Philodice'' was introduced in 1866 by the French ornithologists Étienne Mulsant, Jules Verreaux and Édouard Verreaux to accommodate a single species, the purple-throated woodstar, which is therefore the type species. The genus name comes from Greek mythology, Pholodice was the wife of Leucippus and daughter of Inachus. The genus now contains two species that were formerly assigned to '' Calliphlox''. Leucippus (son Of Perieres)
In Greek mythology, Leucippus (Ancient Greek: Λεύκιππος ''Leukippos'') was a Messenian prince. The Boeotian town of Leuctra is said to have derived its name from him. Family Leucippus was the son of Gorgophone and Perieres and brother of Aphareus. He was the father of two Leucippides: Phoebe and Hilaera, and also of Arsinoe, mother of Asclepius and Eriopis begotten by the god Apollo. These three daughters were borne by his wife Philodice, daughter of Inachus. Mythology It is said that Leucippus together with his brother Aphareus inherited their father's kingdom upon his death, but the latter kept the greater authority than the former. Martial Étienne Mulsant (2 March 1797, Marnand, Rhône – 4 November 1880) was a French entomologist and ornithologist.
