Philip Morgan Woodward (2 February 1912 – 10 November 1997) was an Australian judge. National Medal (Australia)
The National Medal is an Australian award given for long service by operational members of specified eligible organisations. It was introduced in 1975, as an original component of the new Australian honours system, and replaced a range of medals available to military and civilian uniformed services for long service and good conduct. The eligible groups have in common that their members serve or protect the community at the risk of death, injury or trauma, hence it is only available to members of the eligible organisations who are operationally deployed. In the case of corrective services, eligibility is restricted to officers with custodial duties. Bernard Blomfield Riley
Bernard Blomfield Riley (21 July 1912 – 4 August 1978) was an Australian politician. He was born in Cairns, Queensland to mill manager Bernard Rocks Riley and Isabelle Marion Murphy. He was educated at The King's School in Parramatta and then attended Oxford University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1934 and a Master of Arts in 1951. Called to the bar at Gray's Inn in 1935 and in New South Wales in 1936, he worked as a barrister. On 15 December 1941 he married Stephanie Marguerite Day, with whom he had two children. In 1960, he was appointed queen's counsel. From 1968 to 1973 he was a Liberal member of the New South Wales Legislative Council; he resigned in 1973 to become a judge of the Federal Court of Bankruptcy. Bar Association
A bar association is a professional association of lawyers as generally organized in countries following the Anglo-American types of jurisprudence. The word bar is derived from the old English/European custom of using a physical railing to separate the area in which court business is done from the viewing area for the general public. Some bar associations are responsible for the regulation of the legal profession in their jurisdiction; others are professional organizations dedicated to serving their members; in many cases, they are both. Gordon Samuels
Gordon Jacob Samuels, (12 August 1923 – 10 December 2007) was a British-Australian lawyer and judge who served as the 36th Governor of New South Wales from 1996 to 2001. Born in London in 1923, Samuels was educated at University College School and Balliol College, Oxford. After serving in the Second World War, he was called to the bar and emigrated to Australia in 1949. Serving as a barrister in Sydney, Samuels was made a Queen's Counsel in 1964 and appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1972. Samuels was later appointed a Judge of the New South Wales Court of Appeal in 1974, serving till his mandatory retirement in 1993, aged 70. A member of the University of New South Wales Council from 1969, Samuels was appointed Chancellor of the University of New South Wales in 1976, serving until 1994, being the longest-serving Chancellor.
