Philip Philipse
Philip Philipse (1663–1699) was the eldest son and heir of Frederick Philipse, a Dutch-born merchant trader, slaver, land baron, and 1st Lord of Philipsburg Manor. However, he died before his father, and by Frederick's will Philip's legacy was split between his bachelor brother Adolphus Philipse and his son Frederick Philipse II, who became the 2nd Lord of Philipse Manor. Upon the death of his uncle in 1750, Frederick II inherited Adolphus' share as well, consolidating Philipse wealth in Philip's line. Early life Philip Philipse was the eldest son of Frederick Philipse (1626–1702), Lord of Philipsburg Manor and Margaret Hardenbroeck (c.1637–c.1690). Philip Phillips (December 13, 1807 – January 14, 1884) was an American lawyer and politician from Cheraw, South Carolina, Mobile, Alabama, and Washington, D.C. He was a member of the Democratic Party who served as the U.S. representative from Alabama. Subsequently, he was a prominent lawyer in Washington, D.C., much involved in the political events surrounding the American Civil War. Family and early life Philip Phillips was born December 13, 1807, in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of Aaron Phillips and Caroline Lazarus, prominent members of the Jewish community there. His father had changed his name from Pfeiffer when he immigrated around 1800 from Ansbach, Bavaria. The family were members of the Congregation Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim in Charleston, and in 1825, Aaron Phillips was the first president of the Reformed Society of Israelites, early leaders in the Jewish Reform movement. Philip Phillips (photographer)
Joseph Philip Phillips (1857 or 1858–1891 or 1892), known as Philip Phillips, was a merchant seaman and a photographer. He is best known for his photographs of the construction of the Forth Bridge. Life Philip Phillips was born in either 1857 or 1858, and was educated at Chester College in England under the direction of the Reverend Arthur Rigg. After he left school he entered the office of a mining engineer. He left the mining profession to become a merchant seaman and left the service after an attack of rheumatic fever in China. He then took up photography enthusiastically and served in the capacity of photographer on the Forth Bridge works. The photographs he took of the bridge were reproduced in an album entitled ''The Forth Bridge illustrations 1886-1887'', which when published received favourable reviews. Philip Aaron Philips (11 June 1831 – 3 June 1913) was a New Zealand politician who served as the first mayor of Auckland City. He held the office from 1871 to 1874 and immediately prior to that, he was chairman of the City Board. He was a member of the Auckland Provincial Council and the Auckland Harbour Board. Early life and family Philips was born in Brighton, England, on 11 June 1831, into a Jewish family. He worked in a wholesale firm in London from 1845 to 1848. He then emigrated to New Zealand and arrived in Auckland in August 1848. After a year, he built himself a store in Vulcan Lane off Queen Street. After some years, he fell ill and went to Sydney for recovery. There, he married Annie Myers, the daughter of Israel and Esther Myers. Philip Phillips (11 August 1900 – 11 December 1994) was an influential archaeologist in the United States during the 20th century. Although his first graduate work was in architecture, he later received a doctorate from Harvard University under advisor Alfred Marston Tozzer. His first archaeological experiences were on Iroquois sites, but he specialized in the Mississippian culture, especially its Lower Mississippi Valley incarnation. Career In 1937, he was appointed assistant curator of Southeastern Archaeology at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard. In 1949, he became its curator; and remained an honorary curator from his 1967 retirement until his death. His professional collaborations with James A.
