Rear Admiral Sir (Charles) Philip Clarke KBE CB DSO (14 March 1898 – 13 November 1966) was a Royal Navy officer who became Flag Officer, Malta. Naval career Clarke joined the Royal Navy in 1911 and was promoted to midshipman in 1914 at the start of the First World War. He served in the Second World War becoming commanding officer of the cruiser HMS ''Caledon'' in July 1939 and commanding officer of the cruiser HMS ''Glasgow'' in November 1943. Philip Clarke (politician)
Philip Christopher Clarke (15 April 1933 – 6 July 1995) was an Irish business consultant and competitive cyclist, who had been an Irish Republican Army member in the 1950s. As a cyclist, he competed in the first two Rás Tailteann races, and represented Ireland internationally. In 1954 he was imprisoned after an IRA raid on a British Army barracks in Northern Ireland, and the following year he was elected to the British parliament as the Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone; as he was imprisoned, his election was overturned on petition. He was released from prison in 1958, after which he broke his ties with the IRA. Philip Andrew Clarke (born 8 March 1960) is a British businessman. He served as the chief executive officer of Tesco plc until 1 September 2014. Biography Early life He was born in Liverpool, where his father was a Tesco store manager on the Wirral for many years, and gave Clarke his first job as a schoolboy in 1974. He was educated at the Liverpool Blue Coat School and went on to graduate with an economics degree from the University of Liverpool. Career Having initially stacked shelves at his local Tesco, he returned after graduating to join the Tesco Management Training Programme in 1981. There have been five baronetcies created for persons with the surname Clarke (as distinct from Clark, Clerk and Clerke), two in the Baronetage of England and three in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Two of the creations are extant as of 2010. The Clarke Baronetcy, of Salford Shirland in the County of Warwick, was created in the Baronetage of England on 1 May 1617 for Simon Clarke. He later supported the Royalist cause during the Civil War. The fifth Baronet was convicted of highway robbery. He managed to escape the death penalty but was deported to Jamaica. Philip Clarke (born 16 May 1971) is an English former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. A Great Britain and England international representative back-rower or , he played his club rugby league in England for Wigan (with whom he won five consecutive Challenge Cup Finals from 1991 to 1995), and in Australia for the Sydney City Roosters.
