Philautus Abditus
''Philautus abditus'' is a species of frog in the family Rhacophoridae. It is found in the highlands of central Vietnam (Kon Tum and Gia Lai Provinces) as well as in extreme northeastern Cambodia ( Ratanakiri Province). The specific name ''abditus'' is Latin for "hidden" or "concealed" and refers to the black spots on the legs that are concealed while the legs are flexed. Description Adult males measure and adult females in snout–vent length. The overall appearance is stocky. The snout is rounded. The tympanum is present but completely hidden by skin; the supratympanic fold is weakly curved. The fingers and toes bear round discs; the toes are extensively webbed. Skin is smooth dorsally and laterally but granular ventrally. Preserved specimens are dorsally pinkish brown or gray. The anterior and the posterior surfaces of the thighs bear large, black spots that are not visible when the legs are flexed. Males have a median vocal sac. ''Philautus'' is a genus of shrub frogs in the family Rhacophoridae from Asia. Some species in this genus are now considered extinct by IUCN, while others are widespread and abundant (such as the recently described ''P. abundus'', which was specifically named for this fact). The taxonomy of the group is unclear, with many poorly described species. This genus is unique in that development not direct, with all growth inside the egg and no free-swimming tadpole stage. Some species have been found to bury their eggs in soil, although they are arboreal, and others attach their eggs to leaves. Virachey National Park ( km, ឧទ្យានជាតិវីរជ័យ) is a national park in north-eastern Cambodia covering an area of . The park is one of only two Cambodian ASEAN Heritage Parks. The park overlaps Ratanakiri and Stung Treng Provinces. The park's flora and fauna is threatened by illegal logging. Administration of the park is the responsibility of the Cambodian Ministry of Environment. Description Located in some of the most deep and isolated jungles of Cambodia, Virachey is largely unexplored and holds a large assortment of wildlife, waterfalls and mountains. The vocal sac is the flexible membrane of skin possessed by most male frogs and toads. The purpose of the vocal sac is usually as an amplification of their mating or advertisement call. The presence or development of the vocal sac is one way of externally determining the sex of a frog or toad in many species; taking frogs as an example; The vocal sac is open to the mouth cavity of the frog, with two slits on either side of the tongue. To call, the frog inflates its lungs and shuts its nose and mouth. Air is then expelled from the lungs, through the larynx, and into the vocal sac. The vibrations of the larynx emits a sound, which resonates on the elastic membrane of the vocal sac. The resonance causes the sound to be amplified and allows the call to carry further. Ilya Sergeyevich Darevsky (russian: Илья Сергеевич Даревский, 18 December 1924 – 8 August 2009) was a Soviet Russian zoologist-herpetologist and a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
