Phil Hay (footballer)
Phil Hay (born 7 February 1938) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Hawthorn in the VFL during the 1960s. Hay played in a variety of positions at the start of his career and was the 19th man in Hawthorn's 1961 premiership side, their first. When Les Kaine left the club at the end of the 1962 season, Hay took his place at fullback. It was there that he played his best football and finished equal second in the 1964 Brownlow Medal count. Hawthorn Football Club
The Hawthorn Football Club, nicknamed the Hawks, is a professional Australian rules football club based in Mulgrave, Victoria, that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL). The club was founded in 1902 in the inner-east suburb of Hawthorn, making it the youngest Victorian-based team in the AFL. Hawthorn is the only club to have won premierships in each decade of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. In total, it has won 13 senior VFL/AFL premierships. The team play in brown-and-gold vertically striped guernseys. The club's Latin motto is '' spectemur agendo'', the English translation being "Let us be judged by our acts." Australian Rules
Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled; for example, players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. Throwing the ball is not allowed, and players must not get caught holding the ball. Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990. The league currently consists of 18 teams spread over five of Australia's six states (Tasmania being the exception). Les Kaine
Les Kaine (8 August 1936 – 18 August 2012) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Hawthorn Football Club, Hawthorn in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL). Kaine started his career as a forward but was pushed into defence later in his career. He played a fullback in Hawthorn's winning Grand Final in 1961. For the rest of the 1960s he played in the Bendigo Football League with Castlemaine Football Club, Castlemaine and Kyneton Football Club, Kyneton. He was the league's leading goal-kicker while playing at Kyneton in 1966, with 84 goals.
