Petsamo Province
The Province of Petsamo ( fi, Petsamon lääni, sv, Petsamo län) was a Finnish panhandle and province from 1921 to 1922, when it was merged into the Province of Oulu. This panhandle used to give Finland access to the Arctic Ocean, until it was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1944. In 1921, Soviet Russia was forced to cede the area of Pechenga to Finland in exchange for the return of Repola and Porajärvi to Soviet Russia, following Finnish independence and military expansion into neighboring Russian territory and the Treaty of Tartu. In 1922, it was merged with the province of Oulu. In 1938, Lapland was separated from the province of Oulu and the area of Petsamo became part of the new province of Lapland. In the Winter War of 1939-1940 the Soviet Union occupied Petsamo, but left the area back to Finland after the Moscow peace agreement of 1940 (Viipuri was ceded to the Soviet Union). Petsamo, Tampere
Petsamo is a district of Tampere, Finland. The district is named after the Pechengsky ( fi, Petsamo), which Finland was acquired in connection with the Treaty of Tartu. At the same time as Soviet Russia ceded Pechengsky to Finland in 1920, some large Tamperean industrial plants began to build a residential area for their working population on the northeast corner of the city. When the area seemed to be far from the center, the informal name of the district was born as a result of the image. The neighboring parts of Petsamo are Kauppi, Kaleva, Liisankallio, Tammela, Osmonmäki, Lappi and Lapinniemi. Petsamo is bordered on the north by Kauppi, on the east by Kauppi and Kaleva, on the south by the Ilmarinkatu street and in the west by Tammela. Battle Of Petsamo (1939)
The Battle of Petsamo was fought between Finnish and Soviet troops in the area of Petsamo in the far north of Finland in 1939 and 1940. The Finnish troops were greatly outnumbered but managed to contain the Soviet troops due to the extreme terrain, weather and leadership. Order of battle Finland The Finnish troops consisted of the 10th Separate Company (''10.Er.K'') in Parkkina and the 5th Separate Battery (''5.Er.Ptri'', four 76 mm field cannons, from year 1887) in Liinahamari. The separate companies and batteries didn't belong to any specific division of the Finnish Army and could be placed in ''ad hoc'' formations. The troops were part of the Lapland Group (''Lapin Ryhmä'') of the Finnish Army which had its headquarters at Rovaniemi. The troops were later reinforced with the 11th Separate Company and a 3rd Company which wasn't part of the original mobilization plans. Raid On Kirkenes And Petsamo
Operation EF (1941), also the Raid on Kirkenes and Petsamo took place on 30 July 1941, during the Second World War. After the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, Fleet Air Arm aircraft flew from the aircraft carriers and to attack merchant vessels in the northern Norwegian port of Kirkenes and the north Finnish port of Liinakhamari in Petsamo. The War Cabinet and Admiralty pressed Admiral John "Jack" Tovey, commander of the Home Fleet, to attack, despite his reservations that the prospects for success were not commensurate with the risks. The operation was intended to be a surprise but in the far north, the midnight sun at that time of year made it unlikely that the raiding force would go undiscovered.
