Petrovsk (air Base)
Petrovsk (also Petrovsk South) is an former air base in Russia located 3 km south of Petrovsk. From 1960 to 1971 the 478th Training Aviation Regiment, initially flying Ilyushin Il-12s and Ilyushin Il-14s, was stationed at the Borisoglebsk. It moved in 1971 to Petrovsk. Petrovsk (russian: Петро́вск) is a town in Saratov Oblast, Russia, located on the Medveditsa River (left tributary of the Don) northwest of Saratov, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: History Petrovsk is an old merchant city, founded by the personal decree of Peter the Great in 1698 to protect the region from the raids of the Crimean Tatars, and also "so that from now on, free people do not come to the roundabout cities and do not repair any ruin ...". The Ilyushin Il-12 (NATO reporting name: Coach) was a Soviet twin-engine cargo aircraft, developed in the mid-1940s for small and medium-haul airline routes and as a military transport. Design and development The Il-12 was developed as a private venture by the Ilyushin Design Bureau from autumn 1943 and was intended as a replacement for the Lisunov Li-2, a license-produced version of the Douglas DC-3. The new aircraft followed a classical layout for a twin-engine transport, with a metallic structure, monoplane wings, a conventional tail section. One major improvement over the Li-2 design was the tricycle landing gear, which allowed better visibility when taxiing and landing. The Ilyushin Il-14 (NATO reporting name: Crate) was a Soviet twin-engine commercial and military personnel and cargo transport aircraft that first flew in 1950, and entered service in 1954. The Il-14 was also manufactured in East Germany by VEB Flugzeugwerke as the VEB 14 and in Czechoslovakia as the Avia 14. The Ilyushin Il-14 was typically replaced by the Antonov An-24 and Yakovlev Yak-40. Design and development The Il-14 was developed as a replacement for the widespread Douglas DC-3 and its Soviet built version, the Lisunov Li-2. A development of the earlier Ilyushin Il-12, (that first flew in 1945), the Il-14 was intended for use in both military and civil applications.
