Peter Farmer (set Designer)
Peter Farmer (3 November 1936 – 1 January 2017) was a British set designer, theatre artist, and book illustrator. Biography Born in Luton on 3 November 1936, the son of a hat factory owner, he studied at an art college in Luton and made his professional debut with his designs for Jack Carter's ''Agrionia'' for London Dance Theatre. Starting with a production of ''Giselle'' for the Stuttgart Ballet in 1966, Farmer worked extensively in ballet, both with the Royal Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet, as well as other major international ballet companies. For the Royal Ballet he designed productions of ''Giselle'' (1971), '' The Sleeping Beauty'' (1973), Robert North's ''The Troy Game'' (1980) and Kenneth MacMillan's ''Winter Dreams'' (1991). For Frederick Ashton's centenary he was invited to supplement the original designs for ''Sylvia'', and in 2006 he also supplemented Oliver Messel's legendary 1946 designs for ''The Sleeping Beauty''. Luton
Luton () is a town and unitary authority with borough status, in Bedfordshire, England. At the 2011 census, the Luton built-up area subdivision had a population of 211,228 and its built-up area, including the adjacent towns of Dunstable and Houghton Regis, had a population of 258,018. Robert Cohan
Sir Robert Paul Cohan (26 March 1925 – 13 January 2021) was a British dancer, choreographer, and the founding artistic director of The Place, London Contemporary Dance School, and London Contemporary Dance Theatre (LCDT), which he directed for 20 years. Cohan also worked with the Yorke Dance Project and the Batsheva Dance Company in Israel. Life and career Robert Cohan was born in New York City to a Jewish family. His family has said that while he was born late on 26 March 1925, his birth certificate inaccurately listed him as being born on 27 March, and he celebrated his birthday across both days. Cohan served in the US Navy in World War II, and while on leave he saw a performance of Robert Helpmann's Miracle in the Gorbals by Sadler's Wells Ballet in London in 1944. London Contemporary Dance Theatre
The London Contemporary Dance Theatre (LCDT) was a contemporary dance company, based at The Place, founded by Robin Howard with Robert Cohan as its Artistic Director. Founded in 1967, and strongly influenced by the ideas of American modern and postmodern dance artists Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham, the company was probably the first contemporary dance company in the UK, and played a pioneering role in developing the art form in that country. Houston Ballet, operated by Houston Ballet Foundation, is a professional ballet company based in Houston, Texas. The company, consisting of 59 dancers, produces over 85 performances per year. History Tatiana Semenova (1955–1967) Houston developed its style for professional ballet beginning in the 1930s, with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. For eleven years, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo spent a week during the Christmas season in Houston performing for Houston audiences. From this exposure grew a desire among patrons for a resident dance company. ''La Sylphide'' ( en, The Sylph; da, Sylfiden) is a romantic ballet in two acts. There were two versions of the ballet; the original choreographed by Filippo Taglioni in 1832, and a second version choreographed by August Bournonville in 1836. Bournonville's is the only version known to have survived and is one of the world's oldest surviving ballets.
