Peter John Fane de Salis, (5th) Count de Salis-Soglio, Count of the Holy Roman Empire, DL, JP, G.C.J.J., K.R.E. (26 February 1799 – 24 December 1870) was a mercenary soldier and landowner in Middlesex and the Irish counties Limerick and Armagh. He was Bailiff of the English Venerable Order of Saint John of Jerusalem and Grand Prior of the Irish one. He was also an hereditary Knight of the Golden Spur/Eques Auratus and Papal Count Palatine of the Lateran. William Andreas Salicus Fane De Salis
William Andreas Salius Fane de Salis (27 October 1812 – 3 August 1896) was a British businessman, colonialist, and barrister. Early life De Salis was the third son of Jerome, 4th Count de Salis-Soglio (d. 1836), by his third wife, Henrietta Foster (d. 1856). Peter, 5th Count de Salis-Soglio was an elder half-brother; Rodolphus (a general) was an elder brother and Henry (a bishop) was his youngest brother. Born in St. Marylebone, Westminster, and brought up in County Louth he was educated at Eton, Heidelberg University, and Oriel College, Oxford, where he took a fourth-class degree in Classics. He was called to the Bar in 1836; and was at 3 Brick Court, Inner Temple, by 1840. He was appointed a revising barrister for Northamptonshire (1839), Nottingham and East Retford. The Battle of Custoza took place on the 24 June 1866 during the Third Italian War of Independence in the Italian unification process. The Austrian Imperial army, joined by the Venetian Army, jointly commanded by Archduke Albrecht of Habsburg, defeated the Italian army, led by Alfonso Ferrero La Marmora and Enrico Cialdini. Godefroy Jean Henri Louis de Blonay (25 July 1869, Niederschöntal, Switzerland – 14 February 1937, Biskra, French Algeria) was an important early member of the International Olympic Committee. Career From 1899 he was the first Swiss member on the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He was to be on the committee for 38 years until his death in 1937, being the 24th on the roll of members since 1884; Pierre de Coubertin is number one. In 1912 de Blonay was one of the founders of the Swiss Olympic Association and from 1912 to 1915 he was its first president. Baron de Blonay was for a time one of the closest confidants of the IOC's second president Pierre de Coubertin. John Francis William de Salis, 6th Count de Salis (*Neuchatel 25 August 1825 – †Hillingdon 7 August 1871) was a Count de Salis-Soglio, a British diplomat, and coin connoisseur. Life He was the eldest son of Count Peter John de Salis by his second wife Cecile Henrietta Marguerite, daughter of David Bourgeoise of Neuchâtel. After some education in London (Harrow) he was an Attaché in Turin (October 1845-December 1849). Lived at Hillingdon. He was a JP for Middlesex. In 1860 he was commissioned into the 24th Middlesex Volunteer Rifle Corps. He was promoted Lieutenant later that year and Captain in 1861. Regiment De Meuron
The Regiment de Meuron was a regiment of infantry originally raised in Switzerland in 1781 for service with the Dutch East India Company (VOC). At the time the French, Spanish, Dutch and other armies employed units of Swiss mercenaries. The regiment was named for its commander, Colonel Charles-Daniel de Meuron, who was born in Neuchâtel in 1738. Dutch service The regiment served the VOC in Dutch Ceylon and Cape Town. In 1795, while the regiment was stationed in Ceylon, revolutionary French forces invaded the Netherlands, overthrew the Dutch Republic and replaced it with the Batavian Republic. As a result, the regiment's pay by the VOC fell into abeyance. Later that year the Kew Letters were issued by the deposed stadtholder, William V, Prince of Orange, ordering the surviving Dutch colonies to surrender themselves to the British for safe keeping. Count Charles-Daniel de Meuron (6 May 1738 - 4 April 1806) was the founder of a Swiss mercenary regiment, Regiment de Meuron, which was employed in the service of the Dutch East India Company in Cape Town and Ceylon. History Charles-Daniel was born in Neuchâtel and enlisted as an ensign in the Swiss Marine Regiment de Hallwyl in 1756. After service in the Seven Years' War against the British, de Meuron transferred to the Swiss Guard. He rose to become a colonel and was made a count in 1763. In 1768, de Meuron was awarded the Croix du mérite militaire. A contract with the Dutch East India Company allowed him to create his own regiment. This regiment was dispatched from France to Cape Town, before moving to Ceylon.
