Periș
Periș is a commune in the far northwestern corner of Ilfov County, Muntenia, Romania. The commune is composed of three villages: Bălteni, Buriaș and Periș. It used to include Brătulești and Cocioc villages, until these were absorbed by other villages in the commune. In Romanian, its name means "a place where pear trees grow". Geography Periș is situated on the border of the county with Dâmbovița and Prahova counties, north of the capital city, Bucharest. It lies on the right bank of the river Ialomița and on both sides of the river Vlăsia. The surface area of the commune is , and its altitude ranges from above sea level. History It was the site of the Battle of Periș, on August 24, 1546, where Mircea the Shepherd, Voivode of Wallachia, launched a surprise attack on the boyars opposing his rule and greatly decimated them. Nova Maree Peris (born 25 February 1971) is an Aboriginal Australian athlete and former politician. As part of the Australian women's field hockey (Hockeyroos) team at the 1996 Olympic Games, she was the first Aboriginal Australian to win an Olympic gold medal. She later switched sports to sprinting and went to the 1998 Commonwealth Games and 2000 Olympic Games. She was elected to the Australian Senate at the 2013 Australian federal election, 2013 federal election, after then Prime Minister Julia Gillard named her as a "captain's pick", installing her as the preselected Labor candidate over incumbent Labor senator Trish Crossin. She retired from the Senate in 2016. Saint Peris
Saint Peris was a little-known Welsh saint of the early Christian period, possibly 6th century. He is referred to in the Bonedd y Saint as a 'Cardinal of Rome'. However, he may have been one of the many children of Helig ap Glannog of Tyno Helig. He is believed to have retired to the solitude of Nant Peris in North Wales, and the church in the village is dedicated to him. Giancarlo Peris (born 4 November 1941), an Italian track athlete of Greek descent, was the final bearer of the Olympic torch for the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. Biography Peris was born in Civitavecchia, a port city on the Tyrrhenian Sea 70 kilometers northwest of Rome. The Italian National Olympic Committee decided that the last torchbearer of the Olympic Games would be the winner of a junior Cross country running race. Peris won and was chosen to be the last torchbearer. Peris was also a promising track athlete and few months before the opening of the Olympic games he competed for his country's national junior/youth team against Poland. He later became a teacher of history and Italian at the technical high-school "G. Baccelli" of Civitavecchia. He also coached at a small athletics club. The Innocence Mission
The Innocence Mission is an American indie folk band formed in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1986. The band is composed of Karen Peris (née McCullough), her husband (and fellow guitarist) Don Peris, and Mike Bitts (on bass guitar). Although all members of the band have contributed to their music, Karen Peris is their main writer. History The band members met in 1980 during a Catholic school production of ''Godspell''. Before being signed to a record label, the band was originally called ''Masquerade'' and played covers at local clubs, events and at Lancaster Catholic High School (the alma mater of the band members). By 1986, the band had changed its name to ''The Innocence Mission'' and began to write original music. They released a self-funded EP titled ''Tending the Rose Garden'' in 1986, of which only 1,000 copies were produced. Perris is an old railway city in Riverside County, California, United States, located east-southeast of Los Angeles and north of San Diego. It is known for Lake Perris, an artificial lake, skydiving, and its sunny dry climate. Perris is within the Inland Empire metropolitan area of Southern California.
