Percy Jones (rugby Union)
Percy Jones (23 March 1887 – 31 March 1969) was a Welsh international rugby union forward who played club rugby for Pontypool and Newport. He was awarded eight caps for Wales and faced the touring with South Africans. Jones was one of the 'Terrible Eight' who clashed with the Irish forwards during the 1914 Five Nations Championship. Rugby career Jones played for several rugby clubs but was selected for Welsh international duty while with Newport and Pontypool. His first cap was against the 1912 touring South Africans and although Wales lost the game, he was reselected a few months later to face England in the 1913 Five Nations Championship. Under the captaincy of Tommy Vile, Wales lost on home soil for the first time against England since 1895. The selectors kept faith with Jones, and played in two of the next three games of the tournament, which saw wins for Wales and Jones against Scotland and France. Percy Mansell Jones
Percy Mansell Jones (11 April 1889 - 24 January 1968) was a Welsh Professor of French. He was born 11 April 1889 at Carmarthen to Arnaud Johnson Jones and his wife. He started his education at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Carmarthen before going on to gain a first-class honours degree in French in 1908 at Aberystwyth University. He later went on to achieving a master's degree. After his time at Aberystwyth, he attended Balliol College, Oxford, where he obtained a B.Litt. He became a lecturer at various universities, specialising in French literature and history and modern French poetry. He obtained the position of lecturer at Aberystwyth University, University College of South Wales, Cambridge University and Cardiff. He was appointed Professor of French at Bangor University in 1937 and went on to hold the position of the first Professor of Modern French Literature at the University of Manchester in 1951. Percy Jones (26 December 1892 – 25 December 1922) was a Welsh professional boxer who competed from 1911 to 1916. He became the first Welshman to win a World championship when he took the IBU flyweight title from Bill Ladbury in 1914. The IBU later became the EBU and that is why the achievement was taken into context when comparing fighters of the same era. Jones also took the British and European flyweight titles from Ladbury in the same match. He has been voted number 6 in a BBC poll of Welsh boxing greats. Percy Alan Jones (20 January 1908 – 14 March 1960) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Originally from Wangaratta, Jones played in Wangaratta's 1925 Ovens & Murray Football League premiership under coach, Percy Rowe. Jones crossed to the Hume Weir Football Club in 1926 (most likely for work during the construction of the Hume Weir), then was recruited to Geelong via Hume Weir Football Club in the Ovens & Murray Football League, after kicking 104 goals in 1928 Jones commenced training with Geelong in March, 1929 and made his senior VFL debut in June, 1929, in round eight, against Hawthorn, kicking two goals, then played again in round nine, against South Melbourne, kicking 1 goal. Percy Jones (born 3 December 1947) is a Welsh bass guitarist known as a member of the jazz fusion ensemble Brand X, from 1974-1980, and 1992-1999. Jones, who was born near Llandrindod Wells, has also done extensive work as a session musician, and has been active with other groups. He played with a New York City trio called Stone Tiger (featuring guitarist Bill Frisell and drummers Mike Clark and Dougie Bowne during different periods) in 1982/83 Jones was also the driving force behind Tunnels, an improvisation collective which released four albums including Progressivity and Live From The Knitting Factory. Residing in New York, he currently is a member of MJ12, an instrumental group based in NYC.
