Pendle Hill
Pendle Hill is in the east of Lancashire, England, near the towns of Burnley, Nelson, Colne, Brierfield, Clitheroe and Padiham. Its summit is above mean sea level. It gives its name to the Borough of Pendle. It is an isolated hill in the Pennines, separated from the South Pennines to the east, the Bowland Fells to the northwest, and the West Pennine Moors to the south. It is included in a detached part of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. History The name "Pendle Hill" combines the words for hill from three different languages (as does Bredon Hill in Worcestershire). In the 13th century it was called ''Pennul'' or ''Penhul'', apparently from the Cumbric ''pen'' and Old English ''hyll'', both meaning "hill". The modern English "hill" was appended later, after the original meaning of Pendle had become opaque. A Bronze Age burial site has been discovered at the summit of the hill. Pendle Hill is a historic summer house between United States Route 202 and China Lake in South China, Maine. Built in 1916, it served as the summer home of Quaker theologian, historian, and writer Rufus Jones until his death in 1948. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Description and history Pendle Hill is located on the crest of a low ridge paralleling both US 202 and the southeastern shore of China Lake, north of the village of South China. The house itself is set on the edge of a small wooded area, with a view down the west side of the ridge toward the lake, across a cleared meadow. The meadow is separated from the lake by a wooded area. The house is a modest -story Shingle style structure, with a gable roof that changes pitch to extend on the west side over a porch, with shingled square posts for support. Pendle Hill is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Pendle Hill is located 29 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government areas of Cumberland Council and City of Parramatta and is part of the Greater Western Sydney region. History George Bond (1876–1950), an American who came to Australia in 1909, established a cotton spinning mill in the area in 1923. It was Australia's first attempt to spin and weave cotton from cotton farms that the company owned in Queensland. Lancashire was the centre of England's cotton industry, and Pendle Hill is a hill in the heart of the Lancashire cotton industry. It seems likely this is where the town gained its name. Founded in 1930, Pendle Hill offers programs open to people of all faiths. These programs include online/residential study programs, short-term courses and retreats, conference services, publications, leadership training, and a walk-in bookstore.
